Re: water pump and timing belt change, what else should i get?
Timing belt and idler kit from eBay, the powers that be say nothing less than an OEM water pump though. www.1stsubaruparts.com
I was going to attempt to see if an STi pump would fit ours but my "friend" sold it out from under me after telling me I had first dibs. You can tell I'm not mad about it though =) |

As far as the water pump, I have an A-1 Cardone reman in mine and it is just fine..... but if you have the funds id do OEM, if not then the CSK version was like $36. |

Re: water pump and timing belt change, what else should i get?
Reman water pumps are a nightmare. I won't put them on a car in my shop, I'd loose the job before I would. I don't want to have to do it over again. Your used OEM is better than a new reman. You get what you pay for. Reman anything is junk unless it comes from the manufacturer. (CVs, starters, w/p, and especially alternators).

At our shop, if the customer didnt want to pay for dealer or premium remans, we would recommend they supply their own part, which would void the repair labor warranty on any parts failure. |

Re: water pump and timing belt change, what else should i get?
Not trying to be contentious; just relating my experience: I've been driving for over 30 years, mostly well-worn cars (including 50,000+ miles in the left seat of an SVX), and I have yet to buy or specify an OEM part when an aftermarket/reman equivalent is available. I did have to replace a reman AC compressor last year, but that was under warranty. Could be I've just been lucky.
That said, it sure would be a drag to install a water pump that turns-out to be junk. I'd include a thermostat and bypass hose in the timing belt/water pump job. dcb |

Re: water pump and timing belt change, what else should i get?
Replace the complete adjuster assembly, if you abide by advice from way down under. This often seizes over time, due to lack of movement and is a prime cause of attendant damage in all Subarus. If you do not replace it, clean and check it very carefully.

Re: water pump and timing belt change, what else should i get?
You get what you pay for. Subaru spent an outrageous amount of money developing the powertrain in this car. Using substandard parts would be foolish. I've been working on japanese cars for 10 years, and I use factory parts. That should tell you something. Don't buy an aftermarket thermostat, that's one of the worst parts to skimp on. There is a major difference between aftermarket and factory on thermostats. And while you're at it, Subaru uses a coolant that has a special formulation. I'd check that out.
