PCV Valve

Sometimes on start up I get a cloud of smoke from my exhaust. Someone told me I should probably change the PCV valve.

Anyone know the part number and a good place to get one?

Re: PCV Valve

if it goes away after a few minutes, it is likely condensation in the pipes.

white= is generally coolant, has kind of a sweat smell to it.
blue(ish)= oil, smells like burning oil. if it goes away after a few minutes, likely valve seals. if it gets worse when you hit the throttle it is likely rings.
black, when you hit the throttle= rich

Re: PCV Valve

Well it hasn't done it is awhile and I don't remember what colour it was. If I had to say a colour I'd say blue but I can't be sure.

Mine does the same thing.. Although I can't tell if mine is white or blue.. Either way it's there ALL the time. How do you fix both?

Re: PCV Valve

The blue cloud could just be an oil overfill, too. I've had the pros do that to me once.

I look at it this way: at least I wasn't shorted oil!

I'm not implying that you can't read the stick; moreover, it shouldn't be overlooked that the doom posted above (valve seals, shot rings, etc.) isn't the only reason you'll see blue smoke. Somebody else on the forum had an overfill, as well. It happens!

Re: PCV Valve

if he has too much oil, it will smoke until the oil is gone. not just on start up.

next time you start the car, have someone else do it and look at the color, how long it smokes, and how intense is the cloud (ie, just a little or are you fogging for mosquitoes)

Re: PCV Valve

go to this link, print it out, and hold it up while someone else starts the car and find the correct color for the smoke!

Re: PCV Valve

I got a free subaru once that smoked all the time.. Part of it was the cracked head, but it also dumped blue smoke, and I replaced the PCV valve and the blue smoke went away. Still dumped huge clouds of white smoke though :P (Drove it back from Hood River with the temp. gauge one bar away from the red )
