4.44 rear end Q

hey all

i am soon going to be going 4.44 with a 96 legacy trans and rear,
but my Q is:

when you do the rear end swap.. taking the ring and pinion gear from the 4.44 rear, do you put that into the SVX rear case? or do you take the " lsd carrier " from the svx and put it into the 4.44 rear?

and when doing so, can one use the svx rear axles with the 4.44 rear end?

the junkyard dude told me i need new axles too, but i said that when swapping the ring and pinion you correct that, since you are using the svx housing still?

i saw SVXfiles' writeup on the topic, but without pics the jargon loses me.
i appreciate any and all light shed on this topic.

thanks

thats a yes .....BUT!!!........

lol

if the 4.44 diff has any issues (bearings basically) and is not really cheaply/easily repairable
you can still use the 4.44 in the original svx case.but u will need to do a bit of grinding to get it re-installed.
(grinding on the inside of the case that is.......my "guy" had to do just that to get mine together and i wasnt present at the time to see just what he had to do.....)
the diff works perfectly, and i couldnt be happier with the results.....
it launches HARD when u step on it!!

i believe the info regarding grinding the case is on here somewhere......

thank you so much... that fclears up a lot of Q's...

it is a 96 legacy GT btw

so the lsd carrier goes into the 4.44 rear with the 4.44 gears, or if the rear is in bad shape, just take the gears and grind the nubbins off the inside of the svx diff. nice.

much appreciated info.. i will keep you all posted on my progress! should be going under the knife on monday

Dont forget to use the sideplates from the SVX not the legacy because the bearings in the sideplates are matched to the ones on the LSD for the SVX. Also put some kind of threadlocker(loctite blue) on the bolts for the ring gear and the sideplates. Hope this helps

Got that a little backwards, it's the 4.44 Leagacy case that you need to grind the nubs off of when putting in the SVX LSD carrier.

Yes grind the Legacy rear and use the LSD and sideplates from the SVX. If you use the SVX rear you have to pull the pinion gear out of the Legacy rear also and a lot more work, easier to grind the Legacy rear IMO.
