Question What does a healthy MAF look like?

Is there a picture posted somewhere of the inside of the MAF.

I just finished giving mine a soak in vinegar ... it's clean now.

I just see two small sets of wire bales/foils in the sensor. Is this what it is supposed to look like?

I think you're describing the "hot wire" part of the MAF...yes, it's supposed to look like that. If your MAF is going bad, it's often connections in the upper section below the "cap" of the MAF. Remember that a MAF off of an Impreza will also work on the SVX.

Well ... mine's toast now.

Check engine light, dies, the whole nine yards.

Yea, I read about using Impreza MAFs ... and it looks like you can buy new elements for the earlier Impreza MAFs for under $50.

The SVX MAFs look like they would be a PITA to disassemble, but looking at the scoobymod forum, it looks like tearing down an Impreza MAF is a piece of cake.

Why not just pull a JECS one from a early model Legacy. They're probably much more in supply and cheaper. (I got my past two MAF's for $25 each!!)

The junk yards are starting to catch wise to this. They demanded and got $75 for it.

It was from a '95 Impreza ... fits, looked nearly identical ( green label rather than blue ), and now the SVX runs fine.

$75 is much better the $350 new. Congrats on the cheap fix!

Not sure where to go in CA for parts...I could help you if you were in GA .

Anyway, I have used a 93 Legacy MAF with no issues, stalls, or high rpms.

So this one is a direct fit? Do you have any info on which specific models and/or years will fit? If so I will update the post in General Topics which lists all alternate sources of SVX parts.

It fits directly, and looks identical to the original, except for a green label instead of a blue label on the unit.

The scoobymods forum folks also noted that later model Imprezza MAFS also fit, and have cheaper replaceable MAF plugs in them as well.
