Question speedometer died + check engine light

My speedometer suddenly stopped working. All others in instrument panel work. car starts and runs well. "check engine" light comes on. Any ideas?

You can read the CEL if the car is before 1995, but I'm 99% sure that your VSS1 is gone.

Vehicle Speed Sensor 1. Yes, you need it. Check the codes and see what is happening. Use the how-to documents here at the network. If you need a speed sensor let me know and I have one I can sell you.
