Question Throttlebody

I was curious what the symptoms would be if your throttle body was dirty or clogged? Any information would be helpful. Thanks

The main Indicators of a dirty throttle body are a rough idle and loss of power.

Randy,

Where does the dirt come from? Do some people leave out their air filter or can leaks develop in the induction tract, after the filter?

Trevor.

Hi Trev. the dirt doesn't come through the air intake. It comes from the exhaust gas re circulation valve, and the crankcase ventilation valve, It is moved back and forth to the throttle body, by the pressure waves that operate there.

I agree and since most cars have 'cold' manifolds these days the oil fumes from the crankcase condense in the manifold and cause the greatest portion of the problem.

"Dirty" to be more specific, would be "gummy." Carbon and and varnish forms on the inside of the throttle body. The varnish gums up the butterfly valves causeing them to stick and also not to close properly. This, as Harvey pointed out generally comes from waste emitted from the EGR and PCV systems. You'll probably be surprised at the amount of black gunk that pours from your TB when you spray cleaner into it. I know I was.

Thanks Guys for the informed reply which I savvy in full.

You see I am used to playing with nice clean matched and smoothed and yes often cool manifolds. All this power robbing anti smog stuff does not sit well with me and strange as it may seem we are not compelled to use it although legislation is in the offing.

However I am not about to tear everything off the SVX as I did with my previous Isuzu Piazza with good results.
