Legacy GT vs Impreza 2.5 RS vs WRX

I have given this some thought and I have narrowed down my next project to a used WRX, or a Legacy GT/Impreza RS and putting the 2.5 Turbo kit on it from SPO Motorsports. They say all they do is Subaru's so I guess they are OK. I have seen them around for awhile. This will probably be something I'd start in 2 years or so. At this point I'm just getting ideas. I like the prospect of the new Turbo Legacy, but $35k isn't in my budget. I'm thinking 2002 WRX or even better, 1996-2000 Legacy GT or 2000-2002 Impeza RS, as they would be much more affordable then a used Rex. Anyone like to chime in and share thier thoughts? It would be greatly appriciated.

Dan

if you went with the legacy or even the RS, youll need to build the engine up a bit before you turbo it, sure, the engine can handle only 5lbs of boost from the kit, but building the engine is just another way to help keep your reliability of the engine, and i would imagine that you want some sort of reliability..... if you are going to spend around $4000 for a turbo kit, you may as well spend a little more to help it last....
and the stock clutch on either one of those cars will not be able to handle the power from the kit, ,so thats just another thing....

but if you want to get the most amount of power without spending too much, i would go with the WRX, ,because, in my opinion, a turbo engine from the factory will respond to throwing more boost at it than a non turbo engine, and you would be able to take the WRX higher in power than you could get the RS or Legacy (getting the most for your money).... and you might not even have to spend $4000 or more on the WRX to make it really fast.....

but if money is no matter for you, i would say do the legacy GT!
just cause thats my personal favorite of the bunch!

check out the Cobb tuning and Vishnu sites to see what the WRX can do with a little aftermarket goodness. with just a turbo-back exhaust and a re-flashed ECU, you are gonna be VERY fast.

You should talk to my friend here on base... He used to have a 1997 Legacy GT... His dad owne a performance place in WV (Where I got my monster alternator from) so he had access to all sorts of goodies... In the end the car ended up having a Complete closed deck from cobb tuning, Stage 3 turbo heads from Cobb, Twin turbo kit that was modified so that the GT25 was spooling the T3/T4... STi 6 MT, twin plate Cerametallic clutch, Cobb performance suspension... This thing had to be the ultimate sleeper!!! It looked completly stock on the outside and inside... Stock wheels, paint and interior... But it idled like a pissed off bear!!! And would easily break all 4 tires into a spin on a launch... Oh yea it would also run 10.9 in the Quarter... Serious power!!! It was estimated to have close to 500whp!!!! Crazy!!! But one **** of a car!!!

What about buying one of the new Legacy GTs? Another option would be to do an STi or Forrester XT engine swap on a pre-2005 Legacy GT or 2.5RS.

Actually I remember reading somewhere (Sport Compact Car?) that there's a yellow police WRX giving speeders h*ll in CA.
