I think one of the trickest things ever to come out of Honda Motor Company was the JDM-only CRX del Sol SiR (marketed here as simply the Honda del sol.)

The JDM had the "Transtop" feature, a completely mechanized targa roof removal system. This unfortunately added almost 800 lbs. to the car and sacrificed too much performance, not to mention trunk room.

Here is it in operation:

Cool gimmick

That's a cool little video clip. I remember reading about that in some magazine before the del Sol came out in the U.S. I think when I read about it, it was said that would be the way it worked for the U.S. cars as well. I've never been around these cars and always kinda assumed that was the case, but I guess not.

Very cool idea, but yes, definitely some drawbacks (in more ways than one )

That is just TOO COOL. Imagine removing the targa top completely, or eliminating the mechanism that pushes it into the 'trunk lid', and instead mounting some ESTES rockets INSIDE the trunklid.

HwhehEhHEHehHE. James bond would be proud. Could you imagine that? Stoping next to a car, hearing weird mechanical noises, watching the trunklid rise above the top of hte car, and firing like 8 rockets in sequence from the openining in the front of the trunk lid?!?!?!

MUahHahAhahAHAh!!!!!

Trick, yes. I thought that with the high hp engine the weight was not such a penalty. However, if the US did not get the 158 hp engine, then weight would be an issue.

Bottom line though guys [Chicane, you listening??], these cars were still hairdresser's cars.

Hairdressing is a state of mind not directly linked to the level of technological excellence.

You can not design a car that wears petticoats, and make this car a tiger by putting in a powerful engine.

It may behave like a tiger but it will still look like it's wearing petticoats.

Joe

my old roomate had a del Sol, and she let me drive it a few times. it was actually kinda fun to drive - like a little go-kart, but i felt like an idiot in the thing. definitely a "chick-car".

Talking

Hey, if the process were reversed (roof pops up & swallows the top of the deck), it could be marketed by Subaru as "The Baja that Bites" option.
Are 'ya listening Lafayette?

You listening SVXitentialist? Just because a car is catergorized as a 'chicks car' doesn't mean it's boring to drive... also, if you really car what OTHER people think of you that much... you must have pretty low self esteem.

I'd drive a metro if it was a blast to drive.

Self Steam

<you must have pretty low self esteem>

Even though I have never met him "eyeball to eyeball", I somehow don't think that low self esteem is one of Joe's problems.

Problems with hairdressers maybe, but not self esteem.

<I'd drive a metro if it was a blast to drive>

I did....and it was! (Chevy Sprint actually)
50+ mpg and 120k trouble free miles and then sold it to my best friend who put many more miles on it until he sold it to a friend...

(I never told it, that it only had 3 cylinders! )

Now, now Rob,

Just because I think some of these cars are a little bit frilly, doesn't mean they would not look good on me. I been told I look pretty in pink.

And I've nothing against chick cars either. My wife likes them.

Not a lot against hairdressers either, other than maybe I don't have a need for their services so much these days.

Low self esteem?? Is that like a mid-life identity crisis where you go out and buy yourself something fast and furious like a Neon??

Joe

PS, I think Fiat X19s are another of this cute 'n' frilly breed.

Bertone X-19......come in please....this is control

<PS, I think Fiat X19s are another of this cute 'n' frilly breed>

I almost purchased one of those in England back in '77.

Then I was overcome with British common sense and bought a new Triumph Spitfire instead.

Don't laugh!! It had Laycock de Normanville overdrive!!!

(and a clutch that went south after only 40k miles...)

Don

Overall, I always thought the X19 was one of the best executed "tiny" car designs ever.

You had a "Hound of the Baskervilles" what?

Ron (searching for my mousse).

And there's also the AZ-1

The Autozam (Mazda) AZ-1 also has SVX style windows, gull-wing doors and a DOHC intercooled turbo 660cc engine.

Even less made than the SVX.

Fiat quality

<Overall, I always thought the X19 was one of the best executed "tiny" car designs ever>

I did too Ron, especially before they stuck the funny bumpers on it and ruined it, like they did the MGB. But the Fiats were prone to many problems, so I don't know if I made the right choice or not.....probably a toss up. Fiat problems vs. Triumph problems.

and then along came Japanese dependability! Don
