How much did the replacement control unit cost?
I have a 1996.

Re: After months of tinkering with airbag..it's fixed.

Codes are 21 and 2 . 21 is Faulty Airbag control unit I believe. 2 could be various shorts or the control unit also?

Re: After months of tinkering with airbag..it's fixed.

#2 code may be because the CU unit is faulty. You may solve both problems with fixing the CU

Re: After months of tinkering with airbag..it's fixed.

Is anyone certain whether a Control Unit from a 1992 will work with a 1996 (passenger airbag)?

I'm gonna say no. '92 had single airbag, '96 has dual.

Re: After months of tinkering with airbag..it's fixed.

Someone needs to confirm this because the 92 first 5 digit p/n is 98221 just like the 95,96 with 98221 on subaruparts.com.
I'm curious if the CU will still work regardless if there is one airbag vs. two.

The main harness would be the different piece.

Bump.

Does anyone know anything about the compatibility of Airbag Control Units between years?

Re: After months of tinkering with airbag..it's fixed.

Well 1992-93 have the same part #, 1994 has 2 different part # one is the same as 92-93 except it has a 1 at the end but could be a typo and the second part # is the same as 1995-97. This is from subaruparts.com

That is due to the swap from single to dual airbags mid-year '94, so as suspected, they are different

Re: After months of tinkering with airbag..it's fixed.

Seth, maybe you can check with your co-workers to confirm if the Airbag CU can be used from any year regardless of single or dual airbags.
If not I think username (Hondasucks) is a suby technician and may know.

Re: After months of tinkering with airbag..it's fixed.

I guess I'll answer this one based on my original assumption...I went to Subaruparts.com and plugged in 2wd (all years) and 4wd models (all years) and the Airbag CU is 98221, the same for all of them.
The main harness is different...one having two plugs (dual airbags) and one having one plug for the driver's side airbag.
The computer unit should work, so if you need it PM me.

I'm actually wondering if the dual harness will work even if the pass. side plug is not used. Curious if the computer will sight a fault.

Re: After months of tinkering with airbag..it's fixed.

Just thought... Maybe Subaru only produces the newer unit now, and it is compatible with any year. But perhaps the old units in 92-93 models are only compatible for those years.
