Holy crap- that is bad. Can you take more pictures of you driver side sway bar it looks like it may be bent up in the picture on your website.

The resident Mechanic at the on base do it yourself hobby shop said it looked to him like the tire was very underinflated and driven like that for some time. Looking at the outside shoulder that kinda makes sense. The mech is ASE certified. His reason does make sense cause nothing under the fender looks like it has been rubbed enough to create that kind of damage.

Does the rim look damaged at all? Perhaps the tire was flat and the car was driven on it for a while.
Another thought would be a worn strut. Is the tread depth the same all the way around the tire?

The rims don't even have curbage on them. The whole driving on the tires low makes sense since the car has gone from AZ to Washington to Cali in the last year and a half.

The other 2 tires are all but new, only about 100K on them. The other tires would be in the same shape but from neglect I now have 2 bum tires.

I noticed this with the first set of tires with the SVX. Using the recommended inflation pressure, tends to result in increased shoulder wear, especially in the rears with some tires. I've always inflated to 33-35 all around since replacing the stock tires and have had pretty even wear.

Might have to try that out on the new tires and the ones that weren't destroyed. I won't be running the stock 16s for long once I sell my VW.

Check the back wheel well for signs of rubbing, as those tires may have been on the rear when the damage was done....

Rear wells are fine. I've been checking my front tires after every drive this week and no sign of wear on them.

Picking up the new tires as soon as the Tire Place calls me back. Lets hope this remedies the problem.
