Actually, none of the places I checked had one of these adapters

Ben's Dad is going to work on it for me as soon as I can remember to take it along down...

no compusa's, best buys's, fry's in your area? i'd pick up the yellow pages and see if any of the computer stores around has one. if not, your other option is to get a USB 2.5" hard drive case/caddy. should run $20-$30 and you can connect that to your USB on another computer. good luck mang. most computer stores should have it if they are serious about their business.

CompUSA is a few hours, BestBuy is understocked, Fry's???? do they do chicken or fish?

At this point, I'm just gonna hand it over to Ben's Dad. I don't even have time to work on the 3-4 cars that need service right now, and I'd probably end up screwing it up worse than it already is

since it's your desktop, you don't actually need an ide to micro-ide adapter. you can plug that bad boy right up to any other ide connector on another desktop (unless it's a sata drive and the other box/pc doesn't have sata connectivity). you may want to make sure that you have the jumper set to the proper position (master/slave) so that the motherboard bios will be able to detect the device.

when you say it keeps running the booting sequence, what exactly is it doing? while loading windows? or before windows is loading?

What I was saying is that since I don't have a second desktop, to use, but do have a laptop, would I be able to slave the destop to the laptop to access the desktops hard drive.

And when I say it keeps running the boot up sequence, Im not sure if it is doing it while loading windows or before. What happens is that it goes thru the system/file checks, gets to the point where it SHOULD be booting the OS but then re-boots and goes thru the system checks again. So it MAY be at the point where windows is loading, or it may do it just prior....no way to really be sure..
The main thing I want to do is salvage a few pics I had yet to burn to disk, then will worry about fixing or replacing the system as it is (more then) a few yrs old anyway.

if you have a USB port, that would be the easiest. get one of those usb harddrive caddy/cases and use that to connect to the USB port on your laptop.

using the micro-ide to ide adapter would work too on your desktop, but you'd have to use knoppix cd to boot up your desktop. you'd have to take the laptop harddrive out, hook the adapter up to it, open your desktop, hook the laptop drive + adapter to it the ide controller (make sure the jumpers are set...if the laptop harddisk doesn't have jumpers or instructions to make it a slave, then make the cdrom a slave and your desktop harddisk master or vice versa leaving the laptop harddisk in it's original jumper position on channel 2 of your ide controller), then boot up via knoppix boot up disk, mount the two drives, and then copy the information that you want over via command line or the knoppix desktop environment. it's up to you.

afterwards:

Best Buy doesn't carry ide adapters... we do have the usb converters for 3.5" drives only.

I bought a usb laptop hard drive enclosure off newegg for 20 bucks a few months ago... you might want to try that

OK... I finally got off my but and got the laptop down to my friend's father to check out. He says that the HD is fine, but Win 2000 is fried.

I still can't find my disks. Any ideas on where to find cheap copies ??

If you ship me your laptop and if your HDD in the laptop is fine, I'll restore your system.

If your HDD is dead, then I can't restore your photos.

Turn around time - 3 days.

Fix cost - None.

So does that mean you have already recovered the photos off the HD? I bought this IDE to USB adapter awhile back and always have it handy. It works with both 2.5" and 3.5" drives. As for getting W2K cheaply, it's as close as your favorite P2P software, if you have another PC. If you're lucky, you might get away with a repair install so you won't have to reinstall all the drivers and software. Make sure your product key sticker is still on the bottom of the laptop and readable. You will need a valid key, as MS is now locking pirate keys out of windows updates.

All my copies of winblows works.

That's what you get for paying MS a few thousand a year.
