Two u-joints at each end. Two u-joints together can act roughly like a CV joint.

cool. I still wonder though, the loss of roughly 20lbs off the driveshaft won't allow for that much of a performance gain or am I being everzelious?

You aren't as obsessed as I am.

Guy says for roughly $225 and some precise measurements he can fab me up a driveshaft and have it ready within the day.

How thick is stock?
We were looking at 3 1/4'' but I have no idea how thick it is.

Damn. That is cheap. Almost sounds too good to be true!

If you buy-it-and-try-it, I would probably jump on the bandwagon for a group buy. I won't be into it without at least one member trying it out, though. I can't imagine a lighter driveshaft being anything less than a nice drop in the rotational mass the engine must spin - very much similar to a lightweight flywheel or crank pulley. Hell, probably more of a performance improvement over a lightweight crank pulley.

New Pultrusion Equipment!!!

NOW I'M FEELIN' IGNERT...never heard of pultrusion before. Fascinating technology. Gonna hafta check it out. Sounds alot more like something they'd do for the Corvette rather than a pick up truck though. Any idea why such an 'exotic' piece in a truck?

The steel driveshafts would rust and eventually rot out. They would twist and sheer off. or just get rediculously out of balance and throw ujoints like it was nobody's business. Not to mention the pole vaulting situation I mentioned earlier...in a much more devistating way.

Looking at my pics of my underbody... the exhaust system would keep that from ever happening. Worst case scenario it would go thunk on your main cat provided you still had it, meaning you could drive the SVX relatively safely if that were to break off.
FYI for everyone.

Again, looking at the pics, the driveshaft is not much larger in diameter than the exhaust pipe. :/
Two inches? Bleh...

Watching, waiting,

Where does this stand? Are you going to have them fabricate it for you?

Dropping 2/3 of the mass out of the driveshaft does amazing things for a RWD car, I know this from first hand experience. There's no reason why it wouldn't do the same for an SVX, particularly a 5-spd swapped one that had the stronger rear drive bias. The MK3 shafts available only use 1 U-joint per side, so one at the output shaft from the trans and one at the differential. Many people hollow out the old carrier bearing to act as a driveshaft loop.

From what I read, GM used those shafts for parts simplicity, (elimination of the carrier, etc) drivetrain efficency, and NVH all in one fell swoop. Because of the sheer volume needed they got production costs down to where it was feasable and with the elimination of the carrier bearing and what not it was actually less expensive when all was said and done!
I found it hard to believe myself, but Tom called it.

There's many other examples of similar driveshafts now currently in cars such as the 350Z.

I'd love to see some before and after results from one of these, I know any 5-spd swapped SVX would love the difference.

Yes, and maybe some other things.

oh ok...

well listen I would love some results on the new driveshatfs as I may be interested in getting one myself in the future. With more power turning to the wheels I would be more confident in a custom one peice as odd as that may sound as I know how beefy our orignal is. Well keep us updated if you do decide to go this route
