Question Rallycross the SVX?

I was at the junkyard with my friend Saturday picking through old Subaru's and we met up with some local Imprezza RS people. They were having a dinner that night and I showed up at the end. Mastro Subaru, our competent and friendly dealer in Tampa is sponsoring a Rally cross on Sept 22 in North Florida geared mostly for RS and WRX owners (those are the active ones anyway, not many SVX owners of course). It is open to any Subaru.

Do you think it'd be insane to try the rally course in an SVX or that I'm better off leaving it at home and watching the boys in the Imprezza's do it? Our cars sit pretty low to the ground, I don't know if it would be able to complete the course. It sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to spend a day beating the snot out of your car The course won't be too awful rough, it is meant for your average Subaru, not modified rally cars, in fact, overly modified cars are not allowed.

The SVX has a whole lotta weight to throw around a turn, but if it's not going to be a difficult course, I'd think it'd be pretty fun.

Heheh, you know many times I've answered this in the past....

YES you can!

The big trick is to scout out the track surface first. A regular rally cross is nothing like a fulfledged rally. However you would be amazed that an SVX will do fine there too. I personally will not take mine to hard course rally, however a rallycross is cake. I've watched plenty of people rallycross in much lower cars than our SVX's. I was suprised myself when I first saw it, but you will be fine.

Just make sure you have someone there to take pictures for everyone.

I'm looking forward to the possible auto-cross at the SOA parking lot, (if they'll let us)

I just posted in the Southeast forum about this event. I am signed up and the Subaru dealer is very excited to have SVX representation at the Rallycross. They want to see how it competes against the RS and WRX's. Anybody that is in Florida that wants to participate, please do!

Awesome...just don't fear the handbrake! It is your friend.

Well...honestly I've never rallied AWD cars before, but I've heard they are much like FWD...which I have rallied.

The only way to describe it is....have you ever done doughnuts in a parking lot before? If your from Florida...the lack of snow/ice probably hinders this, but you may have. Basically just give the wheel a turn, and yank up the e-brake while still under power. This will whip your butt end around in the corner.

If you have ever watched WRC or the like, you will see the guys doing it in hard corners. Anythign with a 90 degree or more, the e-brake is the main way they are getting around it. The idea is to do the following....it works great in FWD....someone please correct me if the technique is different for AWD:

For a right hand turn (lets say 90 degrees)

1. start at the right side edge of the roadway until about 50 feet from the turn
2. jerk the wheel over to the left and head towards the left edge (righ at the beginning of the corner)
3. jerk the wheel back towards the apex of the turn, yank the e-brake, stamp on the gas.
4. release the e-brake and accelerate straight

Basically the idea is to get your momentum away from the turn, then into it quickly with the e-brake up. This will slide the rear end while under full forward moving power.

This will let you cut the apex of the corner without sliding out due to poor road conditions (ie, dirt, snow, ice, etc).

BIG CAUTION!!!! Try it out LONG before you go do it in a race. You will find your car will make a pretty big lateral slide. The last thing you want to do is have your car slide into a tree, in a ditch, or something like that.

Best bet is to find a large gravel area, or loose dirt, and play with it for about an hour. It's a lot of fun, so it's worth doing.

Remember, bring your camera!

Ryan

Jeff,
You might go to this site ( http://www.rallymn.com/index.php?node_id=20 ) and contact Todd Erickson for some pointers. He's not only a heavy duty Subaru Rallycrosser, but, he's a Subaru Senior Master Tech and a heckuva nice guy.

I was wondering what Rallycross was all about. I clicked to the rallymn site. We used to call that Field Trials in the '70's. Great fun. I had a Capri II that wasgood at it (or at least I thought so).

It'd be nice to do that again. This time I'd be a lot faster!

Hey Jeff,

Here is a classic example of exactly what I'm trying to explain:

http://www.coloradorally.org/Photos/...s/dsc00003.jpg

This guy is mid slide, I forgot to mention in the other post though...don't forget the countersteer...or you might just slide into the far side of the corner.

Thanks!

Thanks for the help everyone! I will read up on this and practice the hand brake technique so I don't bring shame to the SVX community.

Re: Thanks!

Wouldn't using the hand brake in an AWD car mess up the tranny?
