Your US legislation is sure to be different, but if such legislation exists, you would need to take its provisions into account.

You're correct, Joe - our legislation is different but not very, and would need to be considered.

I discussed the possibility of creating such a map with Aredub and Sith a few months ago - the software I use can map locations based on postal code (ZIP code to us Yanks), city, state, latitude/longitude, whatever, and doesn't need details such as name or even street address. My idea was to go into no further detail than postal codes, which (I think) would leave everybody pretty anonymous while still showing where the concentrations of SVXs are. Be handy for meets.

I could even map you in Kildare.

Dick - see my last post in the other thread "restructuring regions" or something like that. Sounds like you could maybe make at least part of my idea work!

Postal codes sounds like the way to go Dick.

What one are you going to use for Kildare? The Post office here might find it handy when they get around to using them.

Zooming in on individual countries involves more expertise and software than I've got, but I can make a nifty map of an individual country or state and post that.

Sith said the member database wasn't set up to give the kind of data this project needs, plus anybody who doesn't fill whichever blank we decide to use won't be on it (there's security right there - don't want to be mapped, don't put your zip code down).

It does seem like a great idea.

We'll give Kildare 00001, in honor of you being there and here (on this forum).

The rest of the villages can squabble over what's left.

Hey Dick,

Kildare is a TOWN, not a village.

Plenty of jockeys over there would give you a kick in the toe for saying what you just said.

They came up with that term "ugly American" for a reason, I guess.

No offense meant, I was looking for a sort-of quainter term than "town" that might, you know, be more in sync with the beautiful nature and soul of Ireland and its people.

Did I dig myself out?

That would be a site admin thing. I am merely a "moderator." I can piss and moan, I can delete posts, but I can make no changes in the operation of the software.

The question of a "map" has been approached, but, it would take a great deal of code writing (as I understand it) to configure such a wonderful tool. As a volunteer group, I would feel guilty about asking anyone to undertake such a time-consuming task. This is the reason it has fallen by the wayside in the past.

With some aplomb Dick, but there's no need really.

I'm not a jockey or anything, don't have emotional ties with the place. Things are on a non-Texan scale here. We have "cities" like Kilkenny [from a Middle Ages Charter] that would barely qualify as a town. By the same token we have lots of "towns" with village character, just as you say.

Joe

When I suggested being able to search for members by location I did not mean their street addresses, only by City & State. ZipCode would work too but some cites have 3 or more zipcodes. City would be much easier and vague if we are worried about protecting anonymity.

Something in my locker for you, Joe.

Pretty approximate, due to the lack of postal codes!

BTW, your PM mailbox is full.

I don't mind if the member list gets purged of all the inactive members. Nothing is stopping them from signing up again under the same name.

...as long as none of the posts get deleted.
