What a difference

I am amazed at these stories. Some people, like me, had it so easy that the license might as well have come inside Kellogg's Corn Flakes. You other guys....gee it sounds like the Spanish Inquisition's torture dungeon! Don

My wife took her driving test & instruction in Germany in the late '50s. This was, and believe still is, a 6 month, $1000.00+ ordeal. Consequently, she learned to DRIVE, not just pass a test. Perhaps this is why Germans are rewarded with the Autobahn(s). Gawd, did I enjoy driving over there. Ron.

Talking Never taken a driving test

Yep, it's true. The year i got my liscense (92) in Texas, and that year they instated a new law saying if you had taken drivers ed and passed the written test you didn't have to take the driven one. You just walk in and take a picture and your liscense came in the mail 6 weeks later. I did have an instance during my driving school where the instructor (Mr. Manning, an old jack@$$ that lives next door to my dad...they hate each other). He kept *****ing about my driving (being a bit overly nit-picky) even though i was doing everything EXACTLY the way he said to do it. Well, he was starting to really piss me off so he says take a left...now i know he meant at the next main street in town, but at that moment we were just passing a smaller less used street on our left so i did an immediate 90 degree turn and planted him against the window. For the rest of the trip back to school his hand was shaking and i could hear his ring tapping on the window the whole rest of the way back to school. *hehe* but he didn't say another word to me though. One thing is for sure, I definitly don't have an attitude like the rest of ya'll :-)

<Gawd, did I enjoy driving over there. Ron.>

My big chance back in 76 was a downer. I had a US-spec MG Midget and it started running really bad a few days before our trip to the continent. The local MG guy found some little butterfly in one of the carbs that was there for US emissions regs. Some spring dohicky had broken, but since they weren't used in the UK, it would have to be ordered from stateside. So he welded both of them shut, so the carbs would at least be equal. So here we are going flat out on roads that would be any redblooded American boys dream....doing..oh..about 70....getting passed by Renault....sedans....with 4 people....pulling a trailer....uphill!

Oh the SHAME of it.... Don

(if the engine hadn't been sick, I KNOW I could have made it to 80...)

Summary

If you failed your first time it was due to the pr!ck in the right seat... NOT the one in the left seat.

Don, I have started a thread under "Upcoming Meets" to use as a place to organize Snowshoe II.
I agree, times a-wastin' - and if we want to have a place to stay during peak leaf season, we need to start planning for accomodations NOW.

they should be sorry

Now I think DMV is sorry that they let me have my licence. I think I am one of the faster drivers they ever allow the have licence.
