Transmission "growls"

From around 50mph and also noticeable at low rpms (say at 30mph in 4th gear), the transmission emitts an unpleasant vibration... or at least I think it's the transmission. I also noticed that the car acts as if its diffs were locked during parking manoeuvring. 3rd seems to hold fine for the moment.

What's the verdict?

Re: Transmission "growls"

Transmission problem threads are very common I assume...

Center diff? Rear diff? Tranny?

The sound could be the resonator in the exhaust.
The "parking" sounds like the transfer valve is holding the Transfer clutch on.

Harvey.

Try installing the FWD fuse in the fuse box under the hood and see if the binding while "parking" goes away.

Can you get the car on a lift to watch it up in the air safely?

Yes I can. I will try the FWD fuse tonight, if that doesn't do it, we'll see what I have to look for after having lifted the car.

On a different note, my valve covers are leaking like crazy and oil has been sprayed all over drivetrain components in the front. Are the valve cover gasket available without ordering the "engine overhaul" gasket kit?

Yes, just go through Subaru for the parts.
