rear differential on an AWD question

Can the rear differential, I think it is called, be removed without removing the axial nut ends of the rear CV shafts from the rear wheels and taking the rear CV shafts completely out? I need to take the rear differential out of my doner car and put it in my burgundy looking car. The doner car is outside the garage on grass and the rear wheels of the car are on ramps for safety rather than jack-stands so I can get under the thing to work. Jack-stands don't sit well on grass.

If you know... Thanks

Keith

Re: rear differential on an AWD question

Gotta get the exhaust out of the way. Otherwise before you unbolt the rear, use a pry bar against the CV cup (not the dust cups) and pop out the snap rings retaining them into the diff. Unbolt and drop down. As you lower it the axles will come out of the diff without removing them

Thanks
Is it doable to put it in the other car and pop the cv shafts back in the same way? Well, not exactly the same way with a pry bar, but can they be mashed back in some way?

use a piece of wood or something maliable like it to tap it in with a hammer. be careful not to split the boot
