Re: BIG Problems...I think

Long shot, but you can maybe seek out one of the SVXs that somebody clunkered, make friends with the people who run the yard it's stored at, and do a ninja midnight engine swap before they run the liquid glass stuff in the motor. This would be basically free + whatever you bribed them with.
Nobody would ever know...

Except that I can't find any 'clunkered' around here.

Tom,
You mentioned that you have engines for sale. Am I correct that long block comes with all the accessories (alternator, steering pump, etc.) and short block does not? That is the difference? What are your prices/availability for those?

Those are accessories...... generally a long block includes the heads, while a short block does not...its basically just a rebuilt crankcase. The alternator and PS pump would have to be swapped from your engine.

Re: BIG Problems...I think

I'm +1 for the put the pan back on and see how bad it knocks/runs idea. My car was oil starved some time early in its life and spun a main bearing and is just now starting to have a knock. I know this happened to my car before 55,000 miles when I got it and it has been runnning fine ever since(130,000 now) Also, tom is of course correct as the way the crankshaft is inclosed in the two halves of the block you can't see the journals unless you split the halves, but the technician said he found metal in the pan and he is giving you an estimate of what it would need to return it to proper factory condition. I am a dealership technician and if your car came to me and I saw bearings in the pan I would stop right there and suggest a short block. If the thing doesn't have a rod knock, and you've only lost a main bearing, it will probably run like that for a long time as there are 7 total bearings. You will need to watch your oil pressure though, as the missing bearing will cause a decrease and if it's more than one I would guess that there is a good possibility you will see the oil light come on when the engine is warm and idling.

Just my $0.02

Re: BIG Problems...I think

Well it is a spun rod bearing. The tech has taken the cap off and it and the pieces of bearing are now sitting in my trunk. So now that it's taken apart, there will be no filling it with oil and running it like has been suggested. I haven't seen the crankshaft journals to see how much damage is done there. If it's not that bad I should be able to get away with just replacing that one bearing (#3) right? And is that possible to get at with just the pan off from underneath?

I have been able to remove the cap but never get it back on properly. not to mention, if the bearing spun, there is a reason and just throwing a new bearing in there will likely end in the same result
