Two Problems - Need Advise
Hi all,
As follows: 1) - NJ VEHICLE INSPECTION FAILURE AS RESULT OF EMISSIONS HC READING OF 175 VS 100 AS THE STANDARD. Appreciate comments/possible root cause etc.... Would like to have some idea prior to taking it to be diagnosed..... thanks 2) - Engine Temp needle fluctuating bet normal and high, (almost at red line) and back to normal. Possible thermostat replacement? ??? Thanks again Manny 94 LSI |

I would think the temperature reading would be of way more importance than passing an e-test. Who needs a sticker on a car with a torched engine?
Anyway, HC is raw, unburnt fuel. CO is fuel with too little O2 to burn properly. Excessive HC is usually accompanied by misfire or, in the case of failing e-tests, caused by the engine not being up to operating temperature before testing. Also could be caused by a bad temp sensor (but not the same one as the one that reports to the temp gauge - there are two different sensors.) OR..... there could be a lack of adequate coolant that would cause both sensors to 'wig-out' and provide abberant information. A 'lack of adequate coolant' could also come in the form of air bubbles provided by leaking head gaskets. Not trying to rain on your parade but without more defining information I'm just running amuck.

the emissions is more likely than not the 3rd catylatic converter going bad, and i would suggest flushing the coolant if the level is not low, and change the thermostat for a "fail safe" type of thermostat, basically if the thermostat were to fail it gets stuck wide open instead of stuck shut like most other thermostats

If the car is running properly the cats aren't needed to pass those levels.

If you want to give this a try, you're welcome to email gbw5@yahoo.com your contact numbers. We will discuss about how it works. 2) Are you sure you have enough coolant in your radiator? You may want to try giving your radiator a really good flush and fill up with a good mixture of coolant. Check the radiator hoses are still good and tight. Get yourself a new thermostat and a radiator cap and see if it changes your situation.
