Differential surrendered today :X
Hey i'm new to the forums and i'm glad to have found them.
I have a 1995 SVX AWD. Today i was driving my svx under normal conditions and i heard a varying clicking noise as i sped up and slowed down.. i knew it wasn't teh motor and was hoping it was a wheel bearing or something.. but all of a sudden when i left a stop light A HUGE ticking noise occured and my car was laboring to move.. I got the car to my dads garage and put it up on the lift.. both wheels seemed to spin fine (uh oh) so i pulled out the differential drain plug and alas.. the culprit. A huge chunk of my spider gear popped out of the hole. So i'm going to need a differential. I've heard of people swapping them with other model subarus for better launches etc but i don't know where to find such information. So i'm here looking for some guidance. I don't want to break the bank and I know that if i change the front gears i also have to change the rear. If anyone can steer me in the right direction i'd be mighty greatful. ~Travis die hard SVX owner |

There are 3 differentials. Which one are you talking about?
Probably not the rear, eh? I'm guessing front?

Yeah same thing happened with mine, 2 months after I got it. I ended up having to replace the entire front diff and pinion gear. My spider gear was still good but the Ring gear chipped a tooth and the pinion gears teeth were all chewed up. I actually bought a front diff and pinion gear from svxfiles he knew which one would work for my SVX as supposedly they are slightley different. I dont know if thats true, but how the ring and pinion gears wear depend on the shim behind the pinion gear's bearing.

Well its the front diff... That sucks. It is a PITA to replace as the whole trans needs to come down and be replaced. If it is just spyder gears I may be able to help u out. I need to see what good parts I have

Opps yes it's the front differential.. where the "axels" (?) come out of and go to the front wheels and a drive shaft comes out of and goes to the rear. I found it on apex-auto-parts.com for a whole used assembly it was $400 shipped.. seems reasonable.. unless someone else can help me out
Thanks! |

Ok so my parts guy just got back to me and apparently in an AWD sxv the front differential is actually part of the transmission. So i can either replace the tranny or i can replace just whatever parts are broken within that differntial housing..
This sucks.. i might have to completely junk my svx cause i can't see it being practical to replace the tranny for 1500. Doesn't seem worth it. |

I sincerely hope you do not junk your SVX.

Well i hate to do it.. but i got a old jeep for free and it runs and drives.. so i am going to get rid of my svx.
The parts guys told me that since the pinion gear shaft runs through the transmission before getting to teh differential.. i'd have to just replace the whole tranny. I can personally do the tranny swap but its still about $1500 for a used tranny. I can't see myself dumping 1500 on the car when i have another to drive. Unless i could find an option for around 500-700 dollars.. but it's not looking good ~Travis p.s. I'll give a link to my SVX parts car listing if i end up selling it.. |
