Leak- either PS or tranny fluid

I finally got around to jacking up my car and taking a look for the leak I have had for awhile. I dont know if it is PS or Tranny fluid, but I took some pictures. It seems to be as simple as just a hose replacement, but does anyone know what hose this is, whether its tranny or PS, and also, how do these clamps work? The hose in the pictures is (obviously) marked with the yellow twist tie. But the clamps that connect it confise me. Are they just a one-time use clamp, and I will need new ones, or whats the deal? Has anyone ever replaced this hose before? It is located on the passenger side behind the intake ductwork near the firewall. The second picture shows the ductwork in the top right corner.

The hose marked is a power steering hose.
And an expensive one.

However, start the car with the ps fluid filled, and take a close look at the other rubber hose directly below it.
It could be that the lower hose is squirting up onto the hose that you marked.

The hose you marked, btw, wraps around the passenger side valve cover, and goes directly into the power steering reservoir.

If you can't figure out which one it is, clean every thing up with soap and then watch where it comes from. Sometimes it is tricky to find the right hose. You don't want to replace the wrong one, because some are VERY EXPENSIVE!!

You know whats funny? How if I had used alittle common sense, I would have known that it wasnt tranny fluid, because it is connected NOWHERE NEAR THE TRANNY! Man im dumb. Anyways, im sure that it is this hose, because I just replaced the other hose in that area (the return hose). The main thing Im concerned about though is those clamps. I have asked this question before, and never gotten a response. I need a definitive answer this time, how do those clamps work?

Those are not the clamps.
That is a crimped metal flange, and the actual connections are at the ends, like the end at the ps pump.
The ends take regular wrenches but I forget the size.

At first I was thinking of the wire hose clamps that you were talking about. Those are a pain and I replace mine with the regular ss clamps. The hose is just replaced and has the fittings on it already like was mentioned before.

PS High pressure hose leak

I am having exact same problems- powerful trans/ps fluid smell into car. This same hose seems to be weeping or leaking above rack. The lh end of the rack is soaked. Not sure where to buy hose- I have a quote request in to Annapolis subaru. On my Audi that kept blowing high pressure ps hose (>1200 psi) I sent it to aa hose specialist who remade out of higher rated hose, made a wlded adapter, crimped on hose and returned to me in a week!
Cost half of dealer and much better.

Other suggested vendors anyone?

thanks

The best suggestion (what I am going to use) is 1stsubaruparts.com. They are by far the cheapest. Although you mentioned that it is the left hand side, which I assume you mean the passenger side. If this is the case, it is possibly the PS return hose. I just replaced my return hose (it was leaking as well) and wrote a how-to on it (you can find it at http://www.svx-iw.com/), so you should look into this hose first before thinking it might be the expensive hose which I am about to replace.

PS: Nice to see another Coloradoan on the board. There arent that many of us.

The high pressure is leaking - the rack is wet clear to the drivers(left) side.
I am going to call a Boulder hose shop. The ad for them specifically mentions replacement steering hose. The dealer wants $125 for the hp hose. Have you quoted your source yet?

Now remember, there are 2 high pressure hoses. check out the schematic at http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...ategory=346-A2

The first hose part number is 34610PA031, and is $88.98. The other hose is 34610PA120, and list price is $79.63. Both of these will be plus shipping, which I would estimate at around $10. So if you want to do it yourself (in which case it iis really simple), you can save yourself some money. But make sure you order from 1stsubaruparts.com, they are cheaper then subaruparts.com
