How do I get it up and slide it in
I have a brand new 4.44 legacy outback transmission sitting on my ATV jack underneath my svx (no small feat). I don’t have the rear tranny cross member mounted to it yet, and I think that I need to do that before I jack this thing up. Here is the question: How do I make the transmission slide into place without dumping the torque converter onto my head using nothing but a non-articulating ATV jack. I have surveyed this situation many times. I don’t even think the fully extended ATV jack will get the tranny high enough to slide in. Here is what I am leaning towards: 1.) Take tranny back from underneath car and mount cross member. 2.) Purchase a "real" low profile transmission jack (harbor freight?)
The ATV jack worked well for removing the tranny, but with out any real guidance I do not think I can make it work for the install. All of the write-ups I have found just say, "Installation is the reverse of removal." |

Guess you're doing the solo trans swap...
Get some strong straps from Wal-mart (like the ones used to tie down motor bikes in the back of pick-ups), and strap the torque converter to the trans.
After you get the trans case mounted onto the metal pins at the back of the engine, undo the straps, push the trans completely in and tighten the bell-housing bolts. -Chike

BTW...
Make sure the torque converter is installed correctly. When installed, it should almost be flush with the front of the trans case. If it sticks out by more than 3/4", you haven't installed it correctly.

I would say make sure the engine is slightly tilted towards the rear of the car so your approach angle with the tranny is close to the same. I would say get underneath the tranny and lift with your knees and your arms and kinda wiggle it in there but the manual was way lighter then the auto, i dont know if that can be done with the auto...

I just used some string. It doesn't have to be that strong. The torque converter is heavy, but the string just has to keep it located.

First time I swapped a box, I used an ATV jack. I put a 2X4 under the front edge of the pan. It can be wiggled around a bit and work, but the dedicated tranny jack makes life easier. What I used last time was the harbor freight tranny jack. not a great product (IMO) but OK for the simple and infrequent home use.

Success! Transmission is mounted to engine block, and flywheel is bolted to torque converter. I bought an 800 lb capacity transmission jack from harbor freight and the difference b/t it and the ATV jack was night vs. day. The ability of the transmission jack to adjust the angle of approach on both planes was invaluable. Now my biggest problem is deciding what to do with the spare parts I have laying around. (Old transmission, rear end, tranny jack, ATV jack, torque converter from legacy, ect...) I will have to finish this project on Monday, but it is nice to have the hard part over with. Thank you all for the support.
