replacing transmission mount
Fellers,
AFter getting our tranny rebuilt on the '92 SVX the mechanic said the mount had a slight crack and should be replaced. I ordered one from 1stsubaruparts.com, how easy is this to swap out or would one need a jack to hold the tranny up to swap it out? The mechanic said he would install one for free if i got the part but time is always hard to get down to him. thanks all, Tdog |

you will definitely need a jack or some other way of propping up the rear of the transaxle while changing the mount...I'm getting fuzzy on the sequence (old age ya know), but you might have to drop part of the exhaust systems before the mount will come out.

The engine and transmission are really supported at two points - two mounts underneath the engine and one under the back of the transmission. So if you take the transmission mount off without supporting the transmission...yeah. You get the idea.
I would recommend removing the entire exhaust system, up to the muffler, in one piece as a start. From there you just have to support the transmission and remove the crossmember and mount. Bolt in the new one and put everything back together. If it's your first time, I'd plan for it to take a few hours. I think I could get it done in well under an hour at this point. The exhaust system is heavy, though. Either be really careful and have it supported when you remove it or have a friend on hand. That way your friend gets crushed instead of you. By the way, this post belongs in the Tech Q&A forum. Please post in the appropriate forums in the future.

How does the mount crack? I've always thought the rubber just separates from the metal.

Here is what a cracked one looks like.
Pic of an Impreza, SVX is a two piece mount. I think that there is four bolts on the bottom and two on the tranny, per side. It really is not hard at all. 1. Jack car up and secure with jack stands. 2. Place a 2x4 (or somthing like it) on the jack pot and apply very little pressure to the tranny across the pan. BE VERY CAREFUL! 3. Remove the lower nuts. 4. Remove the top bolts. (You may have to jack the tranny up a little for this. 5. With all bolts out jack tranny up to remove the mount. 6. Install in reverse order. I do not think that I missed anything. You should not have to remove anything else. Steve
