Refinishing Hardwood Floor?

Hey kids-

I just moved into my new place, it's pretty old and needs some fixing up. I'm focusing on the kitchen first, and I've got my new appliances, and I've picked out the new colors for the walls, and picked out my accent lighting, but i have this god awful vinyl floor. But, there is good news! Under this terrible 80's monstrosity is a beautiful vintage hard wood floor. Now, if I rip up this vinyl floor im going to have to refinish this wood floor. How do I do this? I know people do it all the time, and I know i's possible to do it myself, but I dont know where to start. Help me, SVXers, find a way to make my stainless fridge feel at home!

Mike

Mike Davis proving to us that he's 'well-dressed' in more ways than we originally thought.

What kind of shape is the floor in? Did somebody just put vinyl over a nicely-kept, shiny floor, or is it going to need a lot of work? Do you kow what kind of wood it is?

The floor was probably nicely kept at some point, but it's in REALLY rough shape now. The house is really quite old. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is, and i dont know how to tell. I'll take a pic later.

you have to be careful refinishing hard wood. if it has been done before you might not want to do it again because the sanding will take to much of the wood away and the tung and grove wont be stronk enough th hold together. i this is a first time refinish that yo'll be ok. but i would have a pro look at it before you rent a stripper (the kind that strips on wood not on a poll)

Mike,
It is doable for most semi-skilled home improvement people but it is not the easiest thing to do. My suggestion is that if you don't have the money for it to get done by a pro then wait or take money that was gonna be used for something else for this one. If you do decide to go ahead. Basically you'll wanna rip everything out including the tarlike paper I'm guessing you'll have there underneith if its an old house. Also you may have more than 1 layer (our house had 4). Get as much off as possible then rent a sander from a rental place also, get a decent palm sander to do the corners. It is VERY messy and very hard to get it even and right. Maybe though if you're real nice to me and I'm free over a portion of the winter I'll come lend a hand.

have you checked out flooring to cover the hardwood? there's some neat stuff out there now that looks nice. might cost a little more, but it would be easier and no mess, stink, or screwed up kitchen for who knows how long.
