help me put in 5spd

My tranny is toast. I won't bore you with another bad tranny story, but i have to say it was going when i bought it a year ago so...not bad. I'm going 5 spd. I just started shopping for parts.
question #1.
I found a 95 legacy manual transmission. Will it fit?
question #2.
should I buy the kit from smallcar?

You really dont need to buy the kit from small car, you can easily go to any junkyard and buy all the parts off of a impreza, legacy. I think that the 95 legacy should fit, but you should double check on that. I even read somewhere that wrx's trannies fit.

Hay stranger. Any Legacy tranny will work, it's only a matter of weather you get a cable or hydralic system. The cable is a bit easier to install. You just have to make sure you get the right pedal assembly to go with it.

The smallcar $299 DIY kit will help a lot when it comes to fabricating some of the parts required for the conversion but you can get by without it (like I did). Good luck with the conversion!

hey subafreak. Thnx for the feedback. ya I'm going to look at the trany..they want 500. I haven't talked to them about all the parts I need aLSO BUT...I think I can get it all for the same. My friend is a fleet mech. so... he's really good at hydrolics so....I am prob. not going cable. What's with the small car 5th gear? Does anyone else have it? I like the highway cruise the car has now but...don't use it much here in long island.

If it's out of a manual Legacy, it will have to be shortened 1/2", this is cheaper than extending one, as they don't have to supply any more tube, just cut 1/2" out of the front section.

You also have to put the SVX carrier-bearing bracket onto the Legacy Driveshaft for it to mount to the floor correctly...
This just entails drilling out the spot-welds on the bracket, and re-welding it back onto the Legacy driveshaft.

A '95-'99 Legacy manual drive shaft needs to be *shortened* by 3/4" in the front section.

thnx...man you guys are great. Has anyone thought of investing in a carbon fiber shaft? Is it a significant reduction in weight?

None....

There is no "Direct fitting peddal set" it takes a little bit of modification, using some of the parts from a manual pedal set on the SVX auto pedal box

I used a WRX pedal set w/SVX gas pedal. This is for a hydrolic clutch though but was almost a direct bolt in.

Ya I think that sounds good how complicated is the fabrication. I my budget is not that huge so... if i can get away with the savings of not buying the diy kit from small car, I would like to. If the fab is going to take forever then...I would rather save the day+ of labor..
I'm going hydrolic so that peddle asmb. is what I will go with.

Thnx for help.
