[update]
I've adopted my brother's car. I can't afford to fix the MA5T3R, only to have him break down on me again in a few months, so I'm just going to let him sit for a while. [/update] |

I don't know if that's good or bad news.
Anyhow, glad you have a ride you can use. |

In the meantime, I have a very nice car to get around in, and I intend to focus my carophilia on it until the MA5T3R is back to normal Car-o-phil-i-a: (n), a condition in which one feels almost a romantic affection for one's vehicle ...hehehe... |

The MA5T3R has 120k miles. Do I:
(a) Replace the head gaskets & hope for the best? (b) Replace the entire engine? (c) Garage him for 20 years, restore him, and hit the classic car show circuit? (d) SELL! SELL! SELL! (Followed by years of remorse)? |

Head gasket at 120K? Ouch!
Deceased? I thought he was still in the ICU? |

Alcyone,
Okay, so he isn't quite deceased YET. Close enough, though. I went and visited him today. There was a cute little MR2 parked next to him, keeping him company in his comatose state. What it is with these cars? Why are so attached to them? |

(a) Replace the head gaskets & hope for the best?
Been there, Done that. (b) Replace the entire engine? Been there, Done that. (c) Garage him for 20 years, restore him, and hit the classic car show circuit? I couldn't stay away from her that long! (d) SELL! SELL! SELL! (Followed by years of remorse)? NEVER!!! It's hard to find someone to replace a head gasket. Lot's of time if done right. The guy who replaced mine (a) did it without pulling the engine. It lasted about 50K and blew again. When it blew the second time I went back to him. He was too busy building COBRA REPLICARS to work on my baby but recommended a guy in Lancaster Pa. I dropped my baby off there and got her back two months later. He pulled the engine, took it apart and said he couldn't trust just replacing the head gaskets. Junk Yard engine. +20,000 miles on it. rebuilt alternator. new struts. That was almost 100,000 miles ago. Best $$ I've spent. There haven't been many bad head gaskets reported. My first indication of trouble was water boiling in the overflow tank after stopping.(when the engine was running you could see bubbles in the top of the radiator (indication that the head gasket was leaking into the coolant channels). I would be interested in your VIN number. Maybe our babys are sisters. My VIN JF1CX353NH108233. SUBARU has had a run of bad head gaskets, but mostly on its 4 cylinder engines. I have put a lot of $$ into my baby. I'll keep her until there are no more parts left to fix her with. I love this car! Clydesvx

Waht the hell do you meen Subaru has a bad run on head gaskets??????? Not counting that head cracking, oil leaking, timming belt breaking EA82 that almost put Subaru out of bussiness in the 90's what other Subaru motor eats head gaskets??????
Oh yeah don't count the 2.5L eaither. My SVX has 120K on it and I would have no problem doing head gaskets on it and expecting it to get me to 220K without problems. The guy who did your the first time probly didn't get the heads resurfaced or just did it wrong. Altho you could probly get a junkyard motor put in for less than a head job, (hell your only 4 bolts away from pulling the motor anyway) it might be a better way to go, but then again the junkyard motor might be getting ready to pop it's head gaskets Go with what feels best girl, and please don't get attaced to that lame Galant.
