Winter Washing?

How do you guys go about washing the svx in the freezing cold? Do you just go to the drive thru washer thing. I hate taking it there because once you get home it is filthy again. Any winter washing tips? thanks in advance, chris

When I wash my other cars in the winter, I try to wait for a warmer day if possible. Then I take my own bucket of hot soapy water along to the self serve car wash. After washing I take it right home and put it in the warm garage and dry it off.

When I lived in VT, I used to take my SVX to a local automatic place just up the street from my office. 189 starts there and only goes about two miles before it hits 89. You can get on 89 or get off the freeway, which was still only a mile from the office. So I'd visit the car wash during my lunch break, get right on the freeway, and dry the car at 100mph+.

Now I just wash the car before the salt shows up, put the cover on, and wait until spring. I did that Saturday, actually - a friend let me put it in his spare (!) garage. I hadn't driven the car in a couple weeks anyway, but I still miss not being able to visit it in my own garage.

Edit: Be careful with auto places. Some are not low-car friendly and scrape the bottom of the SVX. But I will echo an earlier sentiment: you want one which will wash the bottom of the car thoroughly.

Came back from NY last week with the svx full of salt. With less than half my mind working after the 12 hr drive we hit an automatic car wash late at night. I sat and watched in helpless horror as the huge spinning rim cleaner brushes left the front tires and failed to find my rear tires but instead spun up on the doors. I have a nice 2ft diameter scratch swirl on the doors now.
Be careful choosing auto car washes.

the one i go to is pretty good, but it will knock the passenger side mirror to its back-folded position. not a big deal, the spinning towel-ma-bob gets it everytime, but not the drivers side.

There is a place abotu 2 blocks from me that has hot water in the do-it-yourself bays. I use that and wash it very quickly (I take my own sponge as it always some inconsiderate person always uses the brush to rake up gravel i think) After fully washing the car, I quickly get it home to the garage before it freezes. REMEMBER TO WASH THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR AND IN THE WHEEL WELLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a Subaru. It'll probably rust if you dont take special care to keep it clean in the winter.

I try to wait for a nice warmer day (at least in the 40s) to wash my cars. If it isn't gonna happen I'll go to a pay and spray and just rinse it real good to get me through until the next wash. I definately disagree though about the hot water thang. Believe it or not hot water freezes quicker then does cold water. Don't ask me why but it is indeed fact. Just as cold water boils quicker when put on the burner than hot water does.

what's up with all this winter washing issue? I just wash mine like normal, although on some of the really cold days I admit I have to put on long pants and maybe something over my t-shirt.

sorry, couldn't help myself...I wish I could get to play in the snow (like Mike's recent videos) if that gets me out of any trouble.

I refuse to wash my car since I live on the most construction-concentrated side of Orlando. It's no use to wash your car, when your driveway is nothing but loose dirt.

Morning Dew & Fog with "road construction dust" in the air make lovely spot patterns all over the car. Almost like I have a custom "leopard" paint job!

Is it bad to want to move just because you want to keep your car clean?

I don't know about you folks but if I get the underside sprayed when the Temp is around 35 my speedometer goes completely haywire. It doesn't get back to normal until the temp is above 45.

thank you for being kind & understanding of my really, really poor sense of humor.

I actually have a tiny bit to seriously offer.

When I lived in St Louis some years back I would drive to a power/hand car wash with a leaf blower in the back of the Volvo (yuck) I drove in those days (stupid me, I thought if a car was made in Sweden it had to be THE BEST in snow). After the power wash, use the blower on the car and it will pretty much drive off all the water before it forms an ice sheet. This may not work very well for the seriously cold spots some of you hail from.

Also, lube door/trunk locks with graphite - I learned that one the hard way - WD-40, the dirt it attracts, and a bit of water leaking in the lock to make ice, all combine to make it really hard to use your keys.
