Trunk strut function?
I have an 92 SVX. The trunk slams shut in spite of the trunk struts. How should a properly operating trunk strut function? Should the trunk go down slowly? Could a hand still be broken if the trunk struts, while operating normally, allow the trunk hatch to slam shut?
Would appreciate the basic info. |

Do you mean could it slam shut from a half-open position, or are you asking if it could slam shut from the fully open position? If the former, I'm pretty sure that mine will fall closed from a half-open position, but I doubt very much it would break my hand.
People tend to call the trunk lid very heavy, but I disagree. It's just hinged in a very complicated way that makes it feel heavy. I don't know how those struts are supposed to work. They seem to hold my trunk lid in the open position, but when I pull the trunk lever it doesn't come flying open or anything.

It's been discussed at least once before. I think the consensus is the struts were designed for a trunk with no spoiler (the spoiler being a US add-on). So, while I'm not sure it would break a hand, it certainly shuts with some force if left to just drop.
you could test your struts by taking them loose, one at a time and see if they extend by themselves, etc. |

Yeah, it does take some effort to work the trunk... Not to hijack, but does the spoiler have a purpose? I mean, I read somehwere that it provides downforce but it's not really shaped well to provide lots of downforce. Perhaps it's just an asthetic addition.

I recently installed new trunk struts on my car, which has no spoiler. Before, the trunk lid would stay up if opened fully, but it surely would have broken a hand (or just about anything else) if released and allowed to slam, because it was an absolute free-fall. The new struts will open the lid fully from a position of roughly half-way, and I have to pull it down completely to latch.
