crank and cam sensors
My svx wont start. It cranks but will not start.
I replaced the alternator (had it checked and got a free one on warranty) and it started after some hesisitation. It drove fine and started fine that night. The next morning it would not start again. I checked the codes and got #13 Crank sensor #2, and #29 cam position sensor. Is it likely that both sensors would go bad at the same time? Is there any thing that they have in common that would cause them to give me these codes? Thanks for any help. |

Yup, there's a common denominator - the timing belt. How long has it been since it was changed? It's possible that it has slipped a tooth or two. Of course there are other possibilities but I'd be taking a peek at the belt first.

I'm old and grisly looking enough that I don't worry about risking my looks once in a while.

Thanks. I considered the timing belt also. It is a Subaru belt with about 15000 miles on it. Since it started and ran after I changed the alternator I thought maybe it was in the wiring. Is it possible that if the timing belt slipped, the cam and crank could get into a position to let it start? anyway i will check the timing belt this weekend. thanks for the help.

After reading that the t-belt was fairly new and the car had been running o.k. prior to the alternator replacement, I decided to look into your problem rather than just answering your question. Both the crank sensors sit directly below the alternator and I'm going to guess that one of them has a loose connection or a broken sensor. Before pulling the covers off the front of the engine it might be a bit better idea to remove the alternator and check that the sensors and their connectors aren't physically damaged.
