Funny thing, I also found an article from the 2001 Tokyo auto show saying that the Traviq was a prototype and that there were no plans for production. Now, they're flying out of the showrooms of Japan (But only after Subaru took the basic Chevy[Opel} design and worked their 4WD magic.

The Opel Zafira is the best of the small people carriers. The folding seat mechanism is very ingenius, but aside from that, it's a real good piece of kit.

We don't get the 2.2 here in Ireland on the Zafira, taxation would be punitive, nobody would buy one. However, that is a really good engine, it comes in the Omega, a biggish rear drive saloon.

That is also the engine put in the VX-220, which is Opel/Vauxhall's version of the Lotus Elise. In my opinion, a better car than the Elise, but not much more practical.

Thanks for researching that Randy. The page is gone from the Japanese site, but with the engine layout, I doubt if it is 4 WD. It may be, I'll admit, Opel have put 4WD in cars before. I just don't think the Zafira chassis was designed with AWD in mind, and Subaru do sell 2wd variants of the Impreza here and in Japan.

Here's the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show report on the prototype that used Legacy suspension components along with Subaru's AWD technology.

Subaru: new concept coupe at Geneva

Found this over at the AutoWeek forums... information about a new Subaru coupe. I was hoping to find something about a new SVX-like car... http://chat.autoweek.com/.

"Subaru has recently recruited a new chief designer, Andreas Zapatinas, whose portfolio includes the Alfa Romeo 147, Fiat Barchetta and Alfa 156. Although Zapatinas may have joined Subaru too late to have designed this concept from scratch, he will have had a strong hand in its execution and influenced its final appearance. A source within Subaru is said to have described it as "a sexier-looking 147", though as Subaru hasn't released any pictures of it yet, we can't judge that claim"

There are pics of the 147 there too, so you can judge whether or not it's a good thing... I don't particularly like it.

It also has information on the Subaru/Saab platform sharing.

lost Lance

<Lance has actually won the Tour de France three times. Possibly the greatest cyclist ever>

One of my regrets, is that I had Lance's autograph....and then lost it. He raced in the K-Mart Classic in West Virginia a few years back, and one leg was from Beckley to Hinton and back. The pack actually raced right by the front of my school! Lance won that leg....as he did the entire race....and I went to Beckley to see the finish. After talking to reporters, he turned to sign some autographs and I pulled a business card out of my wallet and got his signature. Jean was cleaning my wallet out a year or so later, did not notice his autograph on the back, and threw the old card away.

Naturally, he goes on to defeat cancer and win the Tour de France 3 times.... Don

Alfa

Shane, it looks like Alfa built a Focus!

It has SOME lines in common with this beautiful design...

No 4WD available on the Subaru Traviq, which is one of the main reasons it has turned into a sales flop! Currently offered with big discounts and car navigation packages.

Opel dealers here also sell the same vehicle as the Opel Zafira but with a smaller motor (1.8), less spec but about US$7000 more. Sales for the Zafira are almost non-existant since the arrival of the Traviq.

re: alfa

wow, i love that new alfa. wonder how much it costs.

in regards to mike's comments to subaru's new cars. i agree with him. i think that most models they have now are ulgy. i guess the wagon's they are making look better than most, but i'm not a wagon fan. the outback/legacy looks ok, but upon entry of the vehicle, i think it is far from the svx. the interior reminds me of a camry or avalon . the wrx interior sucks too. everytime i get in one, it reminds me of a damn civic or corolla. i like the way the svx interior feels like a cockpit vs just a normal car.

But notice the line Randy where they say Fuji have no plans for commercial production of an AWD model.

Also see paddles remarks. I still think this would be a very good buy with that engine, bound to pull like a train.

Renault have a 4WD version of their Scenic, similar size. Looks cute and countrified, and a mate has one in London {Yeah, they really NEED 4wd in London for parking on the occasional grassy kerb}. I don't like the idea. The rear axle takes up luggage space, already scarce in these types of vehicle. Also the 4wd makes them taller, and they are already tall enough to compromise the handling.
