Thumbs up sort of OT....

Could not get to work today because of the Black mountain forest fire; so I went to the village to work on a rental house. Stoped by the tavern for a brew before up the hill to the house....

Saw car and did a double take...A Acura NSX, parked in the middle of town...looked expensive...Arizona tags....dark silver....nice, very nice. Anyone know anything about these??...looked like a fine machine....

Have never seen one of these....

I love my Subies, (I have 3) , but this was sweet....

I just tailed one on the highway yesterday. That's wierd, rarely see any at all, and we each see one the same day.

My dad loves those things, he wants to get one. No complaints from me .

Significant Technical Input
Tom, if you go over to about where Snowshoe and Buffalo Park (west side of Evergreen Mtn.) come together there's a nice Arabian stable. Word is he likes cars, she likes horses and they don't care much for each other. Cruise by there on the nicer Sunday afternoons, many times they'll be having a cookout and you'll see some really nice cars. I've seen older Ferarris, Cobras, Maseratis, a couple Panteras, and a Mangusta there in the past.

The NSX is hailed as one of the most reliable sports cars in the world. When it does break, however, it's expensive. The NSX's engine is not a non-interference design, so a broken timing belt will cause thousands in engine repair.

The entire unibody and skin is aluminum. Very cool, but since it's very difficult (expensive) to work with, even relatively minor accidents lead the insurance company to total the car. Sure, you can bend a quarter panel back into shape on a steel-bodied car, but aluminum doesn't work that way. Bending easily leads to cracks.

I've never driven one, but I hear that they are not very stable or confidence-inspiring at high speeds. That's not terribly surprising, given the layout.

Acura NSX has long been an object of my desire. However for close to $100,000 new, I'd like more than just a nice body and a vtec6. Quite possibly my first choice for a "semi-realistic exotic dream car" is the Lotus Esprit Turbo. That's a turbocharged, mid-mounted v8 underneath what is quite possibly one of the most beautiful and practical bodies i've seen. Beautiful because, well.. just look at a picture of one, and practical because.. look at the ground clearance. I could drive this thing down a dirt road in the winter no problem. Not that I ever would.

Adam,
The Esprit has also been a favorite of mine for many moons. It must have something to do with our brains being bombarded by RF.

Or, could it be that the original Esprit (1972) was designed by . . . guess who . . . our own loveable "GG." Although, after '88, they began to tweak the design without Giorgietto, the Giugiaro influence has not been completely lost.

Meanwhile, I used to meet up with an NSX on my way home from work each day. It was a "D.A.R.E." vehicle, driving back and forth from the State Police post in Madisonville, into Owensboro and back. Luckily, they hadn't painted it all up like the Prowler, the Vette and the "Cormaro" convertible they'd siezed.

Meanwhile, Adam, are you familiar with this site? http://www.espritfactfile.com/

in my opinion, nothing is worse for children than DARE. It teaches them that the police are always friendly, always "cool" and always correct. When you're 12 years old there is absolutely nothing cooler in the world than a grown man WITH A GUN pulling into your school parking lot in a sportscar. You'll believe pretty much anything he tells you. Granted there is a legitimate purpose to dare, but I feel that the way they present the information to children leaves too much room for the officer's own "interpretation."

On a lighter note, I was not aware of the site Randy, thanks very much I'll be spending a few good hours there..

Thumbs up

One of our members, "Calmone", has a black NSX. Ask him how he likes it, assuming he's let it out of the garage for the springtime.

Ron.
