Headlight/MPG thread

Alright, now that the day of headlights has passed, let's get back into this: Does driving with your lights on lower your mpg? I say yes. To have lights, you must use the alternator. The more accessories you have, the more your engine has to work.

Any arguements?

Following that philosophy, just think how your mileage goes up when you don't turn the engine on.

If the engine isn't on you don't get any miles though. :P

There's almost always a down side.

It would but it would be very miniscule..

I read a report a while ago by some agency here in Canada about daytime running lights that said that extra gas consumption for a year on average due to the DRL for a car worked out to be about 1 gallon/year.

Why on earth do you want to bring this up again. I was hoping that you let things die. Leave things alone please.

Can we afford to turn on the lights?

Two 55watt headlights + two tail + no.plate = 130 watt =0.169 hp.

Thats about 0.0007041% of the total engine hp.

Harvey.

They do help other people see you, resulting in a lower rate of accident in shady areas of the road. You can't use gas when the car isnt running.

The short answer would be yes. Of course your headlights are a drain on the alternator.

But the actual numbers are probably insignificant.

I'll keep driving with my lights on. I don't think we've actually touched the headlight controls on any of our Subarus in many months.

At any rate, this reads like a thread that should be in the Tech Q&A forum.

AHA! FINALLY! Someone has successfully and intelligently destroyed any argument abotu this subject. Thank you Oab!

FINAL VERDICT: Yes, it does use gas, but its almost NIL.
