No its OBD-I, i have this Connector.

After work i try the RS232 Hex Comm Tool.

"You need to set the tool to the correct baud rate and protocol, then send a hex command something like 78 12 34 00 to query the memory at location 1234. The response should be 3 bytes repeated over and over 1234xx1234xx where xx is the contents of the memory at address 1234.
send 12 00 00 00 to stop it."

Is this proceeding correct?

Yes, that's correct. Basically:

Open Hex Comm Tool
Press F1 Key
Select Correct COM port
Set to Baud Rate: 1954, Data Rate: 8 bit, Stop Bit: 1, Parity: Even
Click "Open" to activate COM port.
Type "78123400" into the text box and press enter key.

You should get 123400 repeated over and over until you type "12000000" into the text box and press the enter key.

what if using different connectors you CP won't pick up a rom ID?? I have used 3 different connectors with 2 different computers on 2 different 92 models... WTF if wrong with my stuff??

So I am back with some news.

I sent the hexcode and my ecu answer with this.
TX>78123400<TX
0042000000

I am sure that the code came from the ecu because when i unplugged
the Select-Monitor-Connector then i got nothing back.

Is my ECU a special one?

I can change this settings for the Converter.

Are the parameters correct?
This parameters are the defaults.
I test some values but without a success.

YES it works

This is the correct wiring:

GND(black)(USB-cable) to GND (green/black)(SSM-connector)
TXD(orange)(USB-cable) to RXD (blue/white)(SSM-connector)
RXD(yellow)(USB-cable) to TXD (orange/white)(SSM-connector)

Green Light for this Adapter

Hahaha, the transmit/receive wiring was just backwards? I love simple fixes.

I'll have to check out that adapter, it looks really promising.

Yes that was the problem

The Adapter is absolutely advisable.
If you know the wiring you can build it in few minutes.
In the next days i will check the adapter thoroughly.

Agreed. I will actually have to see about getting my hands on one of these and seeing if it is or is not succeptable to the "92 Error." Somehow with it being self-powered and all I can't imagine this being the case.

Here's a bit of trivia.

Mike sent me a dump of his ECU rom to add to my collection. I've noticed there may be a pattern to the version numbers:

722515 - 92 JDM SVX
722525 - 92 USDM SVX
742512 - 94 JDM SVX
742521 - 94 USDM SVX
7432A1 - 96 UK Legacy
744014 - 95 JDM WRX

All the Subaru JECS ROMs seem to start with 7
I wonder if the digit in position 2 indicates the model year 2=1992,4=1994 or the year the code was last revised.
Maybe 25 means SVX or EG33
Maybe the digit in position 5 is the market 1=JDM, 2=USDM
Maybe the digit in position 6 is the revision level of the code

Just speculation and not really useful information.

That is very interesting speculation Phil, and I can't agree that it is not useful. The most interesting repeat observation is the apparent country code for the software.

JDM appears to be #1 each second last digit
USDM is #2 for each second last digit.

The second digit could well mean year of manufacture, but it would be nice to see 1 in this position to confirm the suspicion, because a lot of the 92s were built in '91.

As regards being useful it will mean we can identify an ECU bought from a scrapper and ensure it will work correctly when used as a donor.

You'll have to take your contraption to a UK SVX meet, find an actual UK SVX, and dump its ECU. I'd be willing to wager that the character in position 5 will be 'A'. SVXistentialist is on to something with the country code.

EDIT: Just bought a Metra adapter and the USB-TTL adapter for $40 total... I'll assemble it as soon as I get it and run some tests.

Assuming both ends are 9-pin D type, you just need to connect pins 2,3 and 5 at each end. Connect it straight through, 2 to 2, 3 to 3 and 5 to 5. Ordinary three-core household appliance flex works well, no need to spend over the top on fancy multicore shielded computer cable.
