Re: Power Mode Selection

Try getting the car up to about 45 mph, then let off the gas completely, then mash it to the floor. If the power light doesn't light up then, you probably have a problem.
The power light isn't flashing when you start it, only lights up? Just making sure since it blinks to show a transmission error code

Re: Power Mode Selection

Pretty sure it just lights up with the rest of the indicators, but I'll watch closer when I start it up in the morning.

You would notice if it flashed, it flashes 16 times at start up if there is a code. I just wanted to check as it would help with diagnosis

Re: Power Mode Selection

So yeah... It works just fine. I just hadn't had any reason to slam the pedal to the floor yet

Re: Power Mode Selection

It is programmed in such a way that it will start Power mode much easier at low speeds than at high speeds.

You will notice Power mode comes on very easy if you floor the boot at 30 mph.

It might not come on at all if you hit the carpet at 80.

It will! Just stomp on the gas, let your foot up fast and stomp again... Activates the power mode when you do

Re: Power Mode Selection

Think I'll revive this thread from the dead for 2 reasons:

1) Thanks to Ron, NeedForSpeed, my '97 now sports a JDM Power switch, in the stock position. Even lights up! I'll confess to being a little skeptical regarding it's benefit, until I drove the car! Definitely peps her up. Ron also installed the Shift Lock release button from my '93 while we had her disassembled. Thanks again my friend!!

2) I also have a question regarding the "Power" lamp in the dash, missing in this MY. How are the trouble codes read in the OBDII cars? Related question; Is the lamp missing in the gauge cluster, or just not used? Would be nice to have the lit indicator when activated.

Glenn

Interesting question. Our '96 has no transmission info available through the OBDII interface. TCU codes are read the same way as OBDI. Are you sure the power light is deleted in your '97?

Re: Power Mode Selection

cdvs,
Reading back through this thread I see numerous references to "no power light" from owners of OBDII cars. I lack a '97 Service Manual, so have no true documentation to be certain. Waiting for some more folks to chime in on this. I know I have no power lamp lighting at start-up or when activated by the newly installed switch.

That was a fun day, the second mini-Roseville meet

While I was working on Blackberry, Glenn had his clay bar out and went to work on Road Warrior, my 92 Pearl LS-L.

We were both thrilled at how both cars turned out

Now, what about that missing POWER light, how are TCU codes read in OBDII cars?

Re: Power Mode Selection

I've expressed what I know about our '96, an OBDII. Perhaps the '97s are different. If so, we'll have to be more carefull in how we ask the question.

So, when you key the car, and the lights come up, you have a green POWER light?

Checking codes on your 96 uses the POWER light, just like early cars?

I tried to be careful with my wording, because the car wasn't here to check. Now, it is. There is no power light, but the codes are read the same way. The ATF temp light flashes instead of the power light. Have fun!

Another mystery solved, learn something NEW about these cars everyday

Now its time to see what [if anything] happens when the gauge cluster is swapped for an earlier one

OR, to see if the the power bulb is missing and taped over,
OR, even if the stencil is there,
OR, OR,,,,
