can drilled rotors be turned in a lathe?
hi folks!
i just picked up a nice rolling shell with a TON of good stuff on it... i think its the in the best shape rust-wise of the three i now have, so IT will be the basis of the rally beastie! it has nearly new drilled brake rotors and pads, with only a small amount of rust on rotor surfaces due to being parked for a few months.. can these be cleaned up in a brake lathe? or does the cross drilling "fetch" on the lathe teeth and cause an issue with the brake guy? thanks! rob

I have had my drilled/ dimpled rotors cut down slightly. The shop had no problem doing this.
Turned without catching on the edges of the dimples. .

Hope this helps - 'skimming' the discs is possible whatever the ventilation. What I have found, though, is that you need to bed them in and form some kind of 'skin' on the surface before you work them hard. If not, they warp. Discs aren't very dear to buy new these days btw.

I wouldnt even bother lathing them for a little bit of rust. If you are installing new pads, a thin coat of rust is actually beneficial. Remember lathing reduces the amount of metal in the rotor leading to faster brake fade and greater chance of warpage.

yeah...i've been debating the worthiness of even bothering...the rust REALLY is almost not there....
to be honest, ANYthing is better than what i'm running now! lol rust and all.... im able to get genuine subey parts at below dealer cost (thank gawd for friends in high places!!) even so, 4 discs and f/r pads came to 800$$ !!!! gulp!! in hindsight, i shoulda bought off of ebay.... oh well... thanks for the input everyone! that will be next weekends project...sexy new brakes!!

A little sand paper and they should clean up just fine. Some of mine will have rust on them after a week or so and if I drive to town and back you would never know it.

sadly its too late now...they've been on the car for two years...
my source is awsum....genuine Subey rad taxes included brand new was sub 400$ front fenders are (i think) 125$ same with rear quarters....

To answer the original question, yes they can be turned but you need a "rounded" bit. Very few places use these as they are more expensive than standard tips.

ahhhhhh
they must be awful expensive....ive been in/around shops for ummm gee 25 years now and all ive ever seen were the traditional triangular bits... i didnt even know there were other types!! (although it makes sense in retrospect......)

Just the cutting edge is curved, so it removes metal progressively across the holes.

I had 'em.. . Dint like 'em! Never noticed any better braking, but some shops won't turn 'em.. . some will. Best to countersink if they're holes. Ironically, the small shop by my work wouldn't touch 'em for a $12 a rotor turn, but the Pep Boys would turn 'em for $4! Ha!
I get standard rotors from Autozone or Pep Boys.. . no problems. The cross-drilled rotors warped sooner for me too! Jim
