Manual buttom? What is that?

SVX FAQ: "The only thing the manual button seems to do is to stop the transmission from automatically downshifting from 2nd to 1st gear. "

Can someone explain that for me? And is that the only function? What's the different between on and off manual mode as in the hwy cruising 60+mph?
