Oh No!

I just went out and test drove a 1996 SVX-L.

Tested SVX-LSi

Why the hell did I do this? I feel a deep depression (and happiness) about to happen do to me talking to my wife about it. $$$ *sigh* I'm at a crossroads now. I had NO intention of getting this car....at least consciously. *Brain hurting* I want it....NOW.

I found it interesting that it is a 4 door sport utility vehicle listed on the info. Good luck with the peace talks and possibly getting the car.

I went up to United and test drove that car a couple of weeks ago. It is a very strong performer, with an interior in great condition. It still has the original RE95 tires and idled so quietly I thought the engine had stopped.

The repaint of the front and rear bumpers concerned me a little.as did the *pink* mirrors. If I hadn't wanted a bordeaux pearl I might have come away with that one but his price was too high.

He offered me the car for 13,995 with a 3yr/38,000 extended warranty or 13,200 with out.

I've never driven an SVX that didn't idle that nicely. It is both cool and a problem at the same time.

It's cool because it speaks well for Subaru quality.

It's a problem because when I went to pick the car up from the dealer the last time, it was running and I didn't know it. So I tried to start it.

But that wasn't entirely my fault. I always drive with the lights on and they turned 'em off. So I thought the car was off.

After I signed the papers on mine and handed over the check, I stepped outside to my waiting SVX. It looked so cool . . . I felt so cool. I opened the door, lowered myself "cooly" into the seat. Looked around to make sure the folks at the little dealership were watching me, and I turned the key. SKKRRREEETTT!! The darned thing was running. I "cooly" pulled out of the parking lot, watching the salsman laughing at me, in my rearview mirror. So much for cool.

Kevin,

Have your wife drive the SVX. Then she should call the Beautiful Naviguesser. The Naviguesser now owns the 97 LSi.

The dealership owner (Brian) told me about you. Said a guy came up from Maryland to take a look at it. The car is so darn clean inside and out, I didn't notice the bumper things you speak of or the mirrors. ???? It seem darn near perfect with everything working. It didn't shift like it was having problems either. And I agree, I have never sat in a car who's engine is so darn quiet. My son was with me and was giggly and smiling the whole ride. He kept saying, "Daddy, buy this car. Are you getting it today? Daddy are you going to race this car too? Daddy, daddy....."

I talked to wifelady and she's in limbo about it all. It doesn't have enough utility. I never based my car buying's on her anyway but the two I have now are crowding my little driveway and all. Plus she wants a WRX. And she can't even drive. Lol!

SVXCESS, you being an SVX'er and all, you say the car seems to be in good condition? The price is steep though. The 14k offer still stands....and it seems worth it almost. *sigh* I'm going button my lip. I do want it though.

BTW: Did anyone check out the rest of this place's inventory? Mistubishi 3000 GT VR4, many Nissan 3000ZX turbo's, Mercedes C36 AMG, Toyota Supra Turbo (does 10 second 1/4 mile). Wow!

I love my 96 red L, but it's like I've said...I'd almost kill for a red 96 Lsi, probable would for a '97.

When I was considering an SVX back in June, my wife said that we should get a van instead. I thought about it and realized that we only live once, I work damn hard for a living, I do not need a van to commute to work, and sometimes you have to do things for yourself. I say "go for it". My wife now loves the car and begs me to let her drive it. When she is extra nice to me, I let her borrow it. This car is too much fun to deprive yourself. It's only money and what else are you going to get for that price?

I think like this all the time.

She kept hounding me and hounding about not doing any modifications to the SVX. I bet I looked like a dog holding its head down with its ears folded. I told her something had to be done with the tranny though. Everything is still up in the air. More like 30% I'll get it, 70% I won't. Thanks for the support!

Likewise, Jeni would send a similar message. She was keen on getting an SVX from the first time I sent her a picture link. She quickly made a decision to give up her Miata for this car. She is also the principal pilot. (I communte to work in the Outback, to conserve SVX mileage.)

(btw, nice lookin' car; only about 5000 more miles than our '94.)

Myxaplyx,

The car was in really good condition. I went over it very thoroughly.

Cosmetics:
The plastic panels under the side rear windows were faded, but I used some 3M scratch remover to bring back the color and lustre. The mirrors unfortunately had faded beyond help (But you could have them repainted for less than $100, I'm sure) There were also a couple of long scratches in the left lower body panel and a small dent in the sunroof panel.

I'm not sure why the rear bumper had been repainted. I can understand the front one being redone, because of rock chips, etc. The repaint was good but not good enough to go unnoticed by someone familiar with SVX paint quality.

The interior was great! The tan escaine on the door panels and elsewhere was pretty much flawless. The leather was the same way. It had not been redyed or reconditioned to my knowledge. It had that original soft, matte look andfeel to it.

Mechanicals:
The car seemed a very strong performer. Quiet, responsive and without any unusual noises in the suspension, brakes or steering. Stopped without vibration, brake shudder or squeal.

One odd thing, I took it up to 35mph and FLOORED it!! The front tires made a very small "chirp" and you could feel power being transferred to the rear. I have never been able to duplicate this in mine. It could be from the somewhat worn RE95's on his car. No exhaust rattling or resonator "buzz" under heavy acceleration.

Bottom line:

This is a really nice example of what an SVX should be. The price is still too high. My offer was to be a cash deal with no trade-in hassles. I don't know why he wouldn't budge on the price. (I told him about the other 2 in the area for $9500 and $10,000) I would go $10,500 w/o warranty and $11,000 with the extended warranty.

The extended warranty is the "silver" plan from WPC for 36 mo/38,000 miles. You can use any repair shop/dealer you choose and they use a national charge card for payment of repairs. It has a $50.00 deductible and covers the AWD. The only thing not offered, but available is Diagnostic testing and the ABS system.I talke to them at length and checked them out. They seem to be a fairly reputable company

I still want that Bordeaux Pearl, but if I was inclined towards brilliant red, this would be very tempting. I think the cosmetics could be fixed for about $500. Not much in the way of mechanicals except tires.
