Try checking with your local dealer to see their price on a genuine remanufactured subaru tranny. You should be able to get one wiht a '94.

.... transfer clutch

The tranny isn't blown. Just the the clutches in the tail section. I had mine R/R on warrenty. I would guess $600-700 depending. You have to pull it apart. I'm sure others will chime in. Hope you find a good dealer. B.

Well this is what you do. Measure the tranny oil pressure in the transfer housing. If you have pressure the clutches are shot. If you don't have pressure then the transfer solenoid / valve assy is bad.

I assume you have no warning power light on?

If the clutches are bad you have a lot of fiber and metal in your tranny now. I think I would not drive it in this case.

If the transfer valve/solenoid is bad it can be replaced. The car can be driven. Don't stomp on the accel a lot or you will reck the front dif.

I thought the transfer case didn't actually use friction material? On mine, it was actually the gear on the rear output shaft that broke off. The dealership wanted to replace the tranny, but I let AAMCO try and fix it for $600. They replaced the shaft and it's still running after 2.5 years 40-50k miles.

One suggestion, put in the FWD fuse. It may or may not help, but I did it on the basis that it would stop trying to put power to the rear wheels and make things worse. It might not help, but it couldn't hurt to try.

The gear you are talking about actually provides the power to the front wheels.

Yes, there are clutchs in the transfer housing.

Putting in the FWD fuse will slow the car down and that will help save the front dif.

Well the mechanic tried to explain a little about it to me, but I didn't catch everything. Still, the gear "was" attached to the shaft going to the rear diff. How does that provide power to the front wheels?

Nope. That's why I asked. I'm just trying to think through in my mind how a gear attached to the rear shaft, hence the rear diff, can distribute 90% of the power to the front wheels?

I tried to make a copy with my camera but it came out real bad.

I'll try to explain. The main shaft thru the tranny starts with the Torque Converter and ends with the shaft to the rear wheels. All the clutches, planetary gears etc are located along this shaft between the TC and the rear wheel shaft that comes out the back of the tranny. It is a straight line from the TC to the rear of the tranny.

The last sets of clutches on this main shaft is the transfer clutches for the rear wheels. Right in front of the transfer clutch is the reduction gear. This reduction gear drives a gear on another shaft that goes from the back of the tranny to the front differential.
