Tire Sizes
Right now on stock 16x7.5 rims I have 225/55-16 tires, I want to get 17x8" rims, would I be able to put 225/45-17 tires on with no rubbing and not having my speedo thrown off? or do I need a smaller sidewall yet? Would staying with 225's be the best or should I go wider, I want to keep the 225's to square up the sidewalls alittle more but if a wider tire is better I'll go that route.
Im deciding between the Avon TechM500, Kumho Ecsta SPT, or Pirelli PZero Nero's

I'm sure the 225/45's will be fine if your wheel has the proper offset. My Avon TechM500 245/45 16s on 16x8s lasted about 1 yr. Reasonably quite, pretty sticky. Excellent in rain.

Height:
225/55-16 = 25.74 225/45-17 = 24.97 stock = 24.85 Speedo will be fine.

search: offset wheel calculator to compare wheels. Go to tirerack.com to find tire diameters and such. Good luck.

Should 225's be fine on an 8" wide rim? or would it be better to go with 235's or even 245's?

Big Meats...
I have 245/45 on my RX7 16x8s. The same diameter as stock does allow a more direct comparison of handeling and feel, since nothing else has been changed. I put a set of AVON Tech M500s on. They're a high performance summer tire and quite sticky.
I experienced a slight improvement in ride quality, same or better turn in and an easy 20 plus mph increase in easily flying through my favorite high speed corners, such as my usual freeway on ramp to the beach, a long (half mile) downhill gently arcing left hand curve. They're pretty quite too, initially. The combination of increased witdth and stickier new rubber felt like I was on race rubber. Superb traction accelerating, cornering and stopping. And although a summer tire, the AVON Tech M500 has 4 major grooves to dissipate water so they work very well in the rain. Last year we had record rain here in San Diego and I felt extremely confident that I was in the best all weather vehicle available. Our freeways are extremely dangerous when it first rains because the build up of oil on the road makes them v. slick. I had no traction problems and no worries. The AVONS are now a year old and due for replacement, (they're getting noisey). They cost me less than $100 ea at Discount. Hope this helps. WGJ Last edited by WGJ; 03-12-2006 at 02:46 PM. |
