Check Engine Light

Does the check engine light reset (turn off) if the fault is not detected again for a certain number of miles or ignition on/off cycles?

Mine went off on Sunday and we tried the ignition to get it to clear, but it didn't.

Went to the local AutoZone and they put the Acutuner on it and pulled the codes. I had misfire in cylinder 1 and 5, followed be a slow 02 sensor. Makes sense.

Gonna check plugs and wires this weekend, see what may need to be fixed.

The guy from AutoZone reset it for me.

NOTE- He was so impressed that the diagnostic plug was right next to the steering wheel, he never had one any easier.

Thanks. Advance Auto here in PA will loan me the scanner. I get an intermittent misfire cylinder 5 about once every 3 months. Just curious if it will clear itself. I've heard 20 ignition cycles. Just curious.

There are 2 types of codes:

1 - stored codes: codes that have come up in the past that haven't been cleared.

2 - current codes: currently occurring.

My plug for the scanner is just left of the steering wheel on my outback. Gotta love Subaru.

FYI

The CEL turned itself off this morning when I started the car. There was probably five ignition on/offs and a hundred miles of problem free driving.

I didn't scan the codes this time. Historically I've gotten a misfire cylinder 5 code once every 3-6 months. Runs rough for 20 seconds, turns on the CEL, then runs fine.

This time I decided to wait it out instead of grabbing the scanner.
