Major repair, need help on crank seal...

First of all, thank you for great information.
Just reading your thread, I understood about 60% and more
about the problems. Once again thank you for the hard work.

Now, my problem...
I'm having major issues with my SVX, 92, 109k, pearl white, Denver, CO.

First, I had belt noise in the morning and then radiator crack and
leaks. Now, I have oil on my drive way. Do you believe all these
things happened at the same time? Please believe it!

OK, my solution-

1. I locate the problem with belt noise- Power steering pump. Today
I spoke with pump specialist for rebuilding my pump for $90.
Of course, I have to take out the part. He sad it will take about
2 hrs. with 1 yr. warranty. pump specialist, 303-292-6324
He calls, internal leak....

2. About the radiator, I am going to order through the Subarupart.com for
$377. Anybody knows cheaper place to buy? Due to these problems
I need to save money as much as possible. Let me know.

3. Finally, the leak... This is what I'm having problem with. I need your
help on this issue.

As I read through your threads, I now understand it is crank seal leak.

********** Now my questions *****************

Do I have to take out the crank sprocket in order to change the crank seal and Oil pump or seal? How hard to remove crank spraocket? Do I need special tool?
Would you let me know how to change the seal after the timing belt removed?

Also, what parts should I buy for this job?

Thank you.

To replace the crank seal, you have to do all the steps for replacing the timing belt. There are several threads on the top. I have a how-to in my locker. Are you sure its the crank seal? My power steering pump is leaking ATF all over the front of my engine. My initial diagnosis was a leaky crank and/or cam seal.

Check the how to lockers for power steering pump O-ring replacement. Much cheaper than a pump rebuild and is more than likely the cause of a leaking pump.

Well, I will check the possibility. But most likely it will be the crank seal or the oil pump. The color of oil is almost black not red.

However, I just want to know replacing the seal involes removing the crank sprocket. If I need to remove, do I need any sepcial tool?

You need a special tool to hold the crank pulley in place to loosen it and put it back on tight. Some use a strap wrench but I do not recommend that with a stock crank pulley since it can damage the rubber dampener. A strap wrench is fine if you have an aftermarket one piece crank pulley. Subaru sells a special tool to do it on the stock pulley or you could try to fabricate something.

Once you have the crank pulley off, the crank sprocket should slide right off.
I say should because on 2 svx's I have had it slide right off, but on a separate engine I bought used the thing was on there so tight I could hardly get it off with a gear puller. That engine had sat for a year and developed some rust though - shouldn't happen on a running engine (especially if it is well lubricated with a leaky crank seal )

If it doesn't want to come off you are supposed to tap it out and then thread screws into it to push it off.
