Read this.

I just came across this link:

http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/U...ewreliability/

I heard a small electrice motor noise once after turning the key off and had no idea what it was. The page says it was only in 1996 though, but where is this relay and where can I get a "revised" one?

Also what's with the tranny shift thing? Anybody heard of/done this to go a bit faster?

Any car could eventually have an ABS relay go bad, so don't rule that out just because of the year. The ABS relays are located along with the ABS pump assembly on the passenger side front of your engine bay. Any decent Subaru dealer will have both relays in stock. If a relay fails to turn off when you shut off the car, you'll hear a buzzing sound coming from the passenger side front of the car. If it doesn't stop, it will eventually kill your battery.

As for the shifting thing, this is the ECU bead crush mod. I beleive there is some info in the How To folders. Plenty of 92 owners have done this.

Does it hurt your car at all or did Subaru put it there as a gas-saving feature or something?

I don't remember why Subaru put it there, but they did send dealerships a memo saying that it was OK to crush the resistor.

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX Classic SVX
Here is the link to the Technical Service Bulletin that describes it.

It was designed to make for a smooth, gentle application of power when accelerating from a standing stop. Many customers complained about this, saying it was a hesitation.

ARGH! Why did I not put 2 and 2 together back when I had my SVX?!?! I somehow never figured out that this crush mod was intended to get rid of the hesitation, and I couldn't figure out how to properly launch the car at a drag strip! Dammit!
