The Autocroos bug Strikes

After Reading, I went to watch the Racer do the autocross in Maryland. I was struck by the bug sometime ago, however I didnt want to risk the daily driver, so I never did anything about it. This time it got me good. So now I have another car hanging out at the parents waiting for a little wrench work. I just picked up a 1975 Datsun 280Z with 70K miles. The car was damaged by the mans son. The frame member that runs under the motor was bent, as well as, the steering arm and tierods. It needs quite a bit of work, however, the engine allow is worth the $300 I paid for the car. I dont plan on tagging this car for the road. I'll be repairing what I need to, then I'll run her in the auto crosses. Now all I need to do is finish the 5-speed SVX, so I can start on it.

Well, that's pretty cool, Mike. I seriously considered an '85 300Z last summer. I should have bought that car - I could have avoided the engine rebuild the '86 MR2, which I bought instead, required.

Just keep an eye on your local paper. Deals pop up all the time. I just missed an 88 Prelude w/ new clutch, ignition, plugs, and tires for $800. The ad said it ran excellent. I figured it had over $800 in new parts, but it had sold the day before. The secret is not to look for something specific, just certain traits. I was looking for small, manual and older 70's/80's for easy repairs and something with a good aftermarket support. I think the most import thing was the body condition for me. I can do the machanical, but not body work. I'm hoping I'm not in over my head as it is with the frame and steering damage.

Bummer bud. You may want to stay away from the track for awhile than. Dont want to risk your car until you can build up a little spare change for repairs. And watching is going to be too tempting.

Also, does anyone know were I can get a front kit for a 280Z? It had a little more damage than I realized. I need the frame and most of the steering components.

Risk? You don't have to go fast. You lose a little coin to cone driving like a grampa but you get experience that's worth having.

My third auto-x is this Saturday and it will be for points. Wish I had more of that ex.

Yes, there's risk involved. Cars wear out, and autocrossing will wear them out faster than anything.

If you drive normally there won't be any more wear than if you were to drive normally.

Why would you drive normally? No, really, what would be the point? I have yet to see anybody actually drive leisurely around a course (intentionally...some people think they're really fast, but they don't count because they don't think they're driving normally).

You have poop in your mouth.

Wow, that poor thing needs some care. How's it run? What kind of class are you planning on putting it in? Are you going to strip it out or try to restore it to stock?

I'm going for Prepared class. I'll be gutting the interior and removing the bumpers. It ran when it was park, however that was 5 years ago. I'll have to hotwire it to see if it will run, the previous owner cant find the keys. I'm thinking about removing all unnessisary wireing anyway. I'll put in a kill switch with a push button start and shave all the locks and stuff. I would just weld the doors, but I dont know if I would be able to get through those tiny windows.

Actually got a friend who lets me run his AE86 ('85 corolla gts hatch) around rally-x this weekend and will probably run it for auto-x until I get my own
