Thumbs up SVX Makes Top 10 SportsCars of the 90's

November issue of Sports Car International, Peter Brock mentions the SVX in his Top 10 Choices.
Now I know the SVX isn't a "true" Sports Car, but being mentioned among such Cream of the Crop cars is pretty cool!!! Mr. Brock writes that it was "A poor man's Porsche 959" and that it was a styling hit except for a "few errant lines" or some such.
Pretty COOL!!

Sorry Chike, I was just "poaching" at the newsstand. They had a list from each of their editor/contributors, as well as a number of lists submitted by readers. The NSX was on nearly every list.

Brock's Choice

In naming the SVX as his #10 choice for best of the '90s Sports Cars, Peter Brock had the following comment when he got some flak on his choice:

"One of history's great unknown classics, the SVX is the poor man's Porsche 959! All-wheel drive and a flat-6 engine in a handsome body that missed being perfectly done by just a few miscued lines. The designers of SVX swung for the fence and narrowly missed. The SVX was just too far ahead of its time."

Amen, Pete... (His choice for #1 is the McLaren F1).

For those of you who may not know, Brock is the designer of some significant cars, among which are Jim Hall's first Chaparral
and the Cobra Daytona Coupe, so his choice of the SVX has some
provenance.

Oh yeah That's a step in the right direction for the SVX to become a collectors car. We could all use some more press along the same lines.

I wonder what "lines" he didn't like.

Waterfall grill I'm sure - also the wheels on the prototype look ten times better than the ones that made production. The front grill on the prototype also evoked a greater sense of poise & power than the production grill.

That was a great review/praise of the SVX!

Aloha, gang,

A little Googling has revealed that the 3/94 issue of Sports Car International featured a comparo: the SVX, a Mitsu 3000GT-VR4 and a 911 Carrera 4 (yikes!) You can purchase this issue for 6 bucks at http://www.coltranet.com/zines/sportcar.html
Go for it!

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX Classic SVX
I just bought the November issue of Sports Car International.

In the article, there were 6 contributors, each with their 10 best list. Of these only Peter Brock included the SVX (at no. 10)

His 8th choice was the Superperformance Cobra, 9th choice was the Porsche Boxter and the SVX came in at number 10. Here is the pertinent text from the article:(Brock's text is in bold black type

Quote:
...While Brock's ninth choice needs little explanation, the same can't be said of his eighth and tenth picks. We'll let him do the explaining:

"The Superperformance Cobra is one of the last true sports cars of an earlier era. far better engineered than any of the original AC-built versions."

Okay, Peter, we follow you on the Cobra, but come on, a Subaru SVX?

"One of the history's great unknown classics, the SVX is a poor man's Porsche 959! All-wheel drive and a flat-6 engine in a handsome body that missed being perfectly done by just a few slightly miscued lines. The designers of the SVX swung for the fence and narrowly missed. The SVX was just too far ahead of its time."
I must admit, it is great to be included in the company of the McLaren F1, the Lamborghini Diablo, the Ferrari 355, 550 and F50, Acura NSX and the like.

Its interesting that the Miata made the top 10 in all of the reviewers list, but didn't show up in the Reader's Top Ten.

On the reader's poll the Corvette was No 1, followed by the Dodge Viper, McLaren F1, Laqmborghini Diablo, Ferrari F355, Acura NSX, Ferrari F50, Mazda RX-7, Porsche 993 and the Ferrari 550 Maranello
