Well, you've all got me hooked.
Hey folks, new user here at the forums. Figured my first post should be a Thank You! The advice and kindness provided on this board are 2nd to none, not only for SVX-related boards but all boards in general. Thanks!
In the last month or so, I've taken a huge interest in the SVX. Lord knows Canada isn't the best place to find one of these cars, but that's what I'm working towards. I currently drive a 1989 Acura Integra and it's for sale right now. Once I get those funds, I'm going to pay my current debts and begin putting away the pennies for an SVX. Should be ready to purchase by spring (which is when all the snow here begins to fade anyhow). The local Subaru dealership salespeople didn't know what an SVX was, claimed that they'd never seen one, and just tried to sell me a WRX instead. This worries me because of the needs for future service, wonder if I can trust them to know what theyre doing. For the general/generic car work the guy whose house I live in and his staff at the local Acura dealership are great. Although my landlord is currently rated the #1 Acura mechanic in Canada, he hasn't worked with many Subarus, let alone an SVX. He's sad that I'm ditching the Integra for a Sub' I think the best bet is to buy a well-maintained SVX from someone who knows/loves their car (such as you folks here on these forums). Seems everyone in Canada who is selling an SVX right now is asking far far too much for it, and can't provide proof that it has been properly maintained. I'd need to look into the details of buying a car in the US and bringing it back here to Canada, but that seems to be the best option. The tips here regarding tranny, bearings, and...well EVERYTHING have been a great basis for knowing what to look for while I'm buying. I'll continue to lurk around and read up as much as I can prior to my purchase, contributing where I can (sorry, I'm not at all mechanically inclined). So thanks for getting/keeping me interested in this beauty of a ride, and I hope to be cruisin to a meet next summer. Cheers. -Dan PS: Sorry for the gigantic post. Wanted to get that all out in one thread heh |

See if you can get your Acura mechanic to work on the Suby. A few tips when choosing an SVX. Don't worry too much about whether or not the car has bad wheel bearings. Its pretty much inevitable that they will go bad. The big ticket items are a tranny replacement and body condition. Make sure the tranny has been well-cared for and is in good working condition. Check for body rust (it does happen in climates with salted roads).

Dan,
May I also add my welcome to the site. The best advise in buying any used car (especially a SVX) is to buy the BEST you can find and afford. Getting one cheap that requires a lot of work will be a great disappointment - you will put more money into it than it is worth. Low mileage SVX's are out there. Look hard and don't buy the first one...... Harry
