The evil mind of Larry iii or another iii-ism

I was thinking of finding a wrecked WRX- STI with the drive train (engine & tranny) in good shape.
I would purchase the WRX-STI drivetrain.
Then I will remove the SVX engine and tranny and replace it with the WRX-STI drivetrain.

The pluses for this are :
Increased power 300HP vs 230 HP
6-speed manual tranny vs. orig. SVX auto tranny

The WRX-STI drivetrain is lighter than the original so the car is lighter with more power. It will accelerate quicker, brake (stop) in a shorter distance and handle better. The front will be lighter moving the CG aft.

The negatives are:
I estimate that the cost of this project is $10,000 - $20,000 depending on how much work I do on my own and how much I farm out.
I estimate that it will take about 1 to 1 1/2 years to complete.
New engine mount brackets need to be designed, built and installed.
I think that the WRX-STI exhaust system should also be installed to pass state pollution inspection.
A new CF or fiberglass hood with air inlet scoop (ala BOBB's SVX)is needed for the turbo's air intake.

I'm sure that the WRX motor mounts can be used. I'll let you know very shortly!

...and unlike the SVX engine, those 300hp can EASILY be made to be much more.

where are you going to put the intercooler spray button?

Well if all you want is the drivetrain , I'm sure I can source an STI really cheap Thoes factory alarm systems are such a joke.

First, by drive train I mean engine with as many accessories as I can get, transmission, with clutch and pedal I hope, and any CV joints & axles that I need.
Second, by engine mount brackets I mean the modified support lugs that have to be made to adapt the STI engine mounts to the SVX mounting points.

Third, I did not even get into the exhaust system and the electricals.

It is a daunting task. I am not sure that the difference in all around performance is worth the effort.

It might be easier to adapt two of the warp drive pods from one of the Enterprise's shuttles to the SVX. I'll bet the rewiring on that mod would be quite tricky.

Hey the title of my orig. post was "The evil ... or another iii-ism."

Larry, I mentioned the same idea in the Mods forum a few months ago. I happen to think it is an excellent idea. I also think there is no need to hold out for an STi engine as a standard WRX engine can easily and relatively cheaply be modded to produce as much or more power as the STi.

I think all the benefits outweigh any drawbacks and that it would be well worth doing. I can't imagine why the project would cost you $10K - $20K to do. A standard WRX engine & tranny should be fairly easy to dig up and fairly straight forward to implant into an SVX.

Keep us up to speed on progress if you decide to do it!

I would think that it would be easier to pay a shop to do a *real* turbo conversion on the EG33. I know that this has been talked about, and even attempted, on an SVX engine before. But the EG33 certainly isn't incompatible with forced induction. And if you're going to spend 10-20k on a project like that, keep the engine that's .8L bigger.

That's my 2 cents. You can't tell me that for 10-20 grand you can't make the EG33 as powerful as the 2.5 in the STi.

Well, you can. But you'd be ridiculous.

I got to go along with that. The flat 6 has more potiantal that the STI. The horse power of the basic 2.5L flat-4 is a good bet less than 230. You add the technology that makes the STI a 300hp engine, and your talking a sweet engine. The main problem with moding the SVX is engine room space. I've got a FWD SVX. Without the ABS and a battery relocation kit there is a good bet of extra space. It even allows for the thought of a twin turbo system. Love to try it. I think the main thing need first is upgraded ECU and injectors to keep up with all the extra air you can pump in with twin or large turbos. I even considered looking into the supercharged system used it the aircraft engines.

Geez, you had to harsh on Larry's dream didn't you? Sigh...
Why, by the way, isn't the SVX compatible with forced induction?
Besides, imagine the wheel bearings he'd go through!

if you do an sti swap you WILL need a fmic, you will not be able to use the stock tmic, unless you get a custom hood w/ big giant hoodscoupe

i agree that if you're gonna spend 20k you're better off taking the car to a turbo shop and having them do some FI on the eg33, it does in fact have more potential and the 6mt is not good for more than about 350-400hp, you'd want to upgrade transmissions to a better one anyway, but you would probably still want to use the 6mt as a start point, so...

eg33 turbo, w/ cryo geared 6mt, hp output under 12lbs of boost appx 400hp and torque: much higher than the sti would be...

<--- still thinks that supercharging would be better than turbo for a larger engine like that
