Angry "Dear Sir, please report to the Emission Test Station".

Well, it's that time of the decade again - the every two year "Give us your sheckels in exchange for maybe screwing up your AWD, & other rare parts", Maryland mechanical proctology exam.
What's the latest group opinion? Should I drive by every day until the AWD lane has crashed, & I get to do the simple exhaustectomy like I lucked into last time? Should I let the boys put her on the AWD drums & pray that the drums are all actually turning in the same direction? Or should I put the 2WD fuse in & at least hope that they'll only ruin half the parts? Your collective wisdom always welcome, especially since it's free.

Ron (dreams of mangled clutches dancing in my head).

you might be in luck

Ron,
I just took my '96 Sentra in for its emissions test and all they did was plug in to the diagnostic port with their computer to check that all of the emission control elements were working...didn't have to run it on the dyno! I think this is Maryland's new policy (don't know why we don't just drive by and just throw money in a window...)
Probably worth checking with your local station to see exactly what they'll want to do with your SVX.

emisions in CT is currently not running, the state closed down the "state run shops" but haven't turned it over to the commercial garages yet.

I am not sure about MD but this is the deal in IL

If you have ODBII, they will hook it up to ODBII to see if there are any codes. If no code, you pass.

If you don't have ODBII, they will dyno the car if it is FWD or RWD. IF it is AWD, they will do idle test at the exaust tips and gas cap test and let you go.

and in New Hampshire you can drive your rustbucket 4x4 with a leak in the fuel line and no muffler to the nearest alcoholic/inbred garage/dog breeding facility, hand them $15 and in return recieve an inspection sticker and a scraper..

A friend of mine also told me that you don't need insurance there. Is that true?

I just paid 420 for 6 month full coverage on my car today

Unhappy

Jeez, I'd love to drive to the state of my choice & let Homer have at it, but it ain't too practical to re-register the car. It's a '92, so it's "OBDII-less". Woe is me!

yes, that is correct.. i believe we're the only state without an all-ages seatbelt law and that doesn't require auto insurance.. 840 a year for full coverage is great.. i'm paying about the same (maybe a little less) per year for absolute minimal coverage..

Lwin,
I'm guessing it's a city/county/regional type thing. Downstate, I've never had anything I've owned inspected - visually or otherwise - and don't know anyone who's been asked. (We're hicks, h'yuck, h'yuck!)

Heh. The last time I visited my brother in Berwyn, I was ticketed for no city sticker. When I told friends down here, most said, "Wut th' ****'s a **** city sticker?" ("H'yuck, h'yuck.)

I was talking about the emission thing. My car with 190k passed with flying colours with leaky engine due to AWD and no dyno thing. hehe. None of my cars I have owned was inspected either.

In Arlington Heights, we don't have stickers either but in Palatine (across the road -- 500 feet away) needs a village sticker.

Makes parking in the city interesting. I nearly got a ticket once in Palatine for no sticker but when I asked the lady to run the plate, she discovered that it was registered in Arlington Heights. She had to let me go and she was not happy.

I'm in Maryland. My '92 with 230k on it failed the emissions gauntlet (rolloing drums) test. 3 Catalytic Converters later I went to be retested and they didn't do anything but the tailpipe test. In MD. they only plug in '98 and later cars. It's hit or miss on the test they perform. If its busy they only do the tailpipe test to save time. It takes only about 20% of the time it does on the DYNO.

Ron,
I had my entire exhaust system replaced at Heritage. There wer 3 other SVX's in there with mine. I hope yours wasn't one of them. Two were having transmissions fixed.
