Re: interesting oil changing idea
I'll take a drain plug and gasket any day.
You can't knock one of those loose by hitting a ground hog. Or a deer carcass.

I don't use jacks, ramps, anything. I just reach my long, skinny arms under and get it done. My 97 I have to lift up just a tad to get to the filter though, since it still has the undercover. The 94 hasn't had that cover thing since I got it, so it's really easy and quick.

Re: interesting oil changing idea
Ive always done the lazy "reach under and remove plug and filter by feel without jacking" method on my Subarus. I hope im able to do this with the EVO, but havent done an oil change in it yet.
I did have a Fumoto valve on the 928 without any problems, but as OT said, with a car as low as the SVX, it might be a potential recipe for disaster.

Re: interesting oil changing idea
I too have used a fumoto valve (with nipple) for years on my Legacy. But that car has a steel under-tray that makes losing it to a piece of roadkill highly unlikely, even in my lowered car. The valve makes oil changes very easy, slipping a piece of hose onto the nipple, directing the other end into my drainpan, and opening the valve. This prevents even a drop of splashing or spillage onto the floor.
The SVX is an entirely different proposition though, and I'll just keep using ramps and a ratchet thanks. Glenn

Re: interesting oil changing idea
While using the one in my Legacy, I took it offroading in the Pine Barrens of NJ. I dug all possible bottom part of the car through sand, at one point I got stuck and had air under all 4 tires with the body sunk in the sand. Got yanked out and double checked the valve, no problem.
When driving with it on the SVX late one night, I re-hit a deer at about 70mph. It was already dead on the road, I saw it at the last minute and didn't have time to avoid it so I centered it. I felt the whole car lift as I rolled the deer under me. I never really even lifted off the gas, just checked for smoke and dash lights. The next morning I pulled it onto ramps, there was bits of hair stuck to most parts of the chassis, but the valve was fine.

no need for me.
I'm small enough to be able to fit underneath without jacking. |

No one would EVER drive a Subaru in an area like that!

Re: interesting oil changing idea
my brother put one on his brand new forester, took it to the dealer for one of his first free oil changes and they left it open. i have had them on my cars before (they are still on the cars i just don't own them, i know because i still change their oil) without any issues. just don't let anyone else change your oil because for some reason they are too complicated for the monkeys on the lube racks.
