Cat. questions

I had a 3 inch cat back exhaust and a camaro style muffler put on my car about 4 months ago and im looking to upgrade the exhaust a little further. I know that svx's have 3 catalytic convertors but i dont know whhich ones have sensors in them. Basically i would like to take out any cat that i can and add more 3 or 3.5 inch pipe for performance and sound. Any suggestions?

Re: Cat. questions

Why such big piping? You will reduce the backpressure on your exhaust too much. That will decrease performance. 2.5" piping should be more than ample. And as far as I know, the only sensors in our exhaust are in the pre-cats (o2 sensors).

You don't say what year your svx is, but if it the obd1 model there are only 2 oxygen sensors and they are in the pipes leading to the pre-cats. They are not in the actual pre-cats. You won't have to worry about them if you remove all 3 cats. They will not be affected. obd2 models have a 3rd sensor in the main cat and you will have to rig up something to install that 3rd sensor.

That said, I removed all 3 of mine many years ago and then later ended up adding back in a high flow 2 into 1 cat because I had lost too much low end torque. Top end was great, but driveability around town had suffered too much.

If you do go catless, you might still want to have some kind of expansion near where the main 2 into 1 cat converter is.
