Diagnostics tool

I keep reading threads where members say they are pulling codes. What type of tools are you guys using to pinpoint these engine code numbers? Specific brands would be appreciated.

Thanks

there are two ways. One is OBDI standard and the other is OBDII. OBDII started after 1995, and by US law (dont know about the rest of the planet) there is a unified language and standard between mfg. OBDII has a one size fit all scanner thjat most chain autopart stores have. They will rent it to you and pull the codes for free.
Before then was OBDI where almost every mfg had thier own code reader. on OBDI there are two levels of codes. One level is accessable by connecting diagnostic connectors and doing a few other things in seqence (sometimes slaughtering a small animal and lighting candles). The check engine light would flash a code and you would decipher that code, this does not need a specific reader. The other level requires a specific reader or a reader calibrated for that model car.

hope that helps

My car just gives me "Check Engine", I am OBDI and needs a diagnostic reader to decipher that code. Are you saying that the US SVX just flashes a number on the dashboard?

Same here. I get the check engine light only and I am OBD1. Do I need a tool or are their just flashing LEDs somewhere?

Well on my 92,

you pull the kick panel off on the drivers side and there are two probes and two block connecters there. I watched the mechanic take the probes which are wired into the car and plug them into the block in different pin locations and this caused the check engine light to flash. He read my codes for a bad MAS, drivers side O2 and #2 Crank Sensor off that.

Yes, no extra tools required to check codes on 92-95 SVX's.

More code checking procedured in the SVXipedia (http://svx-iw.com)
